Marcus on the left, with his distinctive glasses and beard, is turned slightly towards his companion, engaged in conversation. They are seated amongst a convivial crowd, drinking and smoking, at tables made from empty beer kegs with umbrellas used for cover. Louis Marcus was born in Cork City to an Irish Jewish family. His grandfather Louis Roseberg came to Cork in 1882, from Akmian, North of Lithuania, fleeing persecution from the Russian Empire. Cork Jews were often referred to as Akmajianites. Marcus began his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1965) and would continue to work on Gael-Linn documentaries until 1973. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1974 for Children at Work (Páisti ag Obair), and in 1976 he was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards for Conquest of Light (1976) which detailed how Waterford Glass is made with an emphasis on the aesthetic nature of the process. Marcus is a member of Aosdána (the Irish Association of Artists limited to 250 individuals, founded in 1981 by Charles Haughey) and an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 2011 he was awarded a special prize for his outstanding work in the Irish language at the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI) Annual Meeting of Directors including Oliver Hirschbeigel, Dearbhla Walsh, Lenny Abrahamson and Ciaran Donnelly. His first documentary film <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prizewinners at the Cork Film Festival for some years. The Silent Art (18 mins.) was shown at the festival in 1959, with music by Bernard Geary and Declan Townsend, and commentary by festival stalwart Dan Donovan. His head is lowered as he attends to the signing, his distinctive dark hair swept to the right with sideburns framing his lowered face. A few children look towards the camera and catch its attention. Bernard Geary (1934-) is a Cork musician, composer, and teacher, born in Gurranabraher where his parents ran a grocery shop. He studied music at the University College Cork during the 1950s and was encouraged in his compositions by Professor Aloys Fleischmann. His early compositions include work for the RTÉ String Quartet (String Quartet No.1, 1960), the Cork Symphony Orchestra (Provocation, 1960), and the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra (Amran Dochais, 1963) as well as vocal and choral works and incidental music for radio. Geary composed a nine-movement Mass of Saint Finbarr for tenor, choir, and organ in 1973 which was first performed at the Church of St. Francis in Cork with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film Festival Choir. It was commissioned by the Cork Film Festival and we might imagine that this photo is probably taken after the premiere of the Mass in June of that year. Given this, while this photo is marked ‘1970s’ we might pin its date down to 1973 or 1974 when he also conducted his mass for the festival. In 1975 Geary conducted the Mass of Saint Patrick which was composed by Philip Green. Geary was commissioned to compose Celebration of Cork for the opening of Cork 800 in 1985 which marked the anniversary of the founding of the city. The work was based on texts drawn from various writings including Edmund Spenser, Seán Ó Faoláin, and the Cork poet Father Prout (Francis Sylvester O’Mahony) and was revived for the Cork Choral Festival in 2018 (David Wright, wrightmusic.net; Cathy Desmond, Cork Examiner, 17.04.2018). Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, judge and Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-73. He studied at the University College Cork before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. Kevin Owens, sitting next to O'Leary in this picture, was born in Charleville; he was a well-known radio performer with radio programmes including Melody from Munster, Songs of the Night, and Music of the Nation. Owens worked with Bernard Geary and gained success with his solo performance in Geary’s Mass of Saint Finbarr on the Aisling record label. For many years Owens was a member of the Holy Cross Church Parish Choir in Charleville and in 1994 he received the Papal honor Benemerenti Medal from the then Bishop of Cloyne Dr John Magee for his services to the parish as a singer. His colleague at this table, Bernard Geary, was born in Gurranabraher, Cork in 1934.
