Mary Tilson, in a dark-coloured top and Movie Girl sash, was Miss Movie Girl in 1975. Miss Movie Girl was a ‘Rose of Tralee’ type contest that ran for a few brief years in the seventies. Run in conjunction with the Sunday World tabloid, it was a contest of county representatives vying for the ultimate title of 'Miss Movie Girl’. It was an enticing affair, the winner would meet with celebrities, be showered with prizes and go on to promote the festival throughout Ireland. In this picture Tilson is talking to the artist and journalist Frank Sanquest. Sanquest was a Cork-born artist who specialised in portraiture and landscapes. He was a past president of the Munster Fine Art Society and for many years was resident set designer for the Cork Opera House until it burnt down in 1954. Sanquest was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James N. Healy which toured with John B Keane plays often with the Cork actor Michael Twomey. From 1940 to 1987 he also worked as the Arts Editor for The Cork Examiner, in whose capacity he might have been attending the Film Festival press briefings. He died in 2008, age 95. Breen is turned towards Leigh in conversation while the others face each other smiling. Suzanna Leigh (1945-2017) was a British actor best known for her film and television work during the 1960s and 1970s. She was born Sandra Smith but was encouraged by Vivien Leigh (who was possibly her Godmother but not confirmed) to use her name in acting. Suzanna Leigh started acting at the age of 13 with Tom Thumb (George Pal, 1958) before working opposite Tony Curtis in Boeing Boeing (John Rich, 1965) and opposite Elvis Presley in Paradise, Hawaiian Style (Michael D Moore, 1966). Leigh worked in several Hammer horror films, including The Deadly Bees (Freddie Francis, 1967) and Son of Dracula (Freddie Francis, 1974) with Ringo Starr, gaining her a cult following amongst horror fans. A bespectacled Coomber, wearing a light-coloured suit and turtle neck jumper, is shown seated at a table scattered with tableware, an ashtray, and some notes. Behind him a poster for the film The Eagle Has Landed (John Sturges, 1976) is pinned to the paisley-print wallpaper. The Eagle Has Landed was a British war film based on the 1975 book by Jack Higgins. The cast included Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland as well as the English actor Judy Geeson in a supporting role. Geeson also came to the film festival and her image can be found in the archive. We note that this photo is dated 1972, but the correct date might be 1976 or beyond given the release date of The Eagle Has Landed in 1976. We recognise some of the delegates from the archive including the film director Terry Gilliam and the actor Linda Hayden, together with the film censor Sheamus Smith and Tom Nicholas from London Friends of Cork. Terry Gilliam, standing at the centre, smiling broadly at the camera with his arm around the shoulder of Linda Hayden, is an actor, screen writer, director and former member of the Monty Python comedy team. He has directed 13 feature films including Brazil (1985), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and most recently The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). At the time of this picture, taken in the 1970s, Gilliam, who started his career as a cartoonist, was the main animator for the award-winnng BBC sketch comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus which ran from 1969 to 1974. His penchant for the surreal and fantastical can be seen in his future film work which often feature black comedy with a twist.  Linda Hayden, seen here next to Gilliam wearing a fur-trimmed coat and smiling at the camera, features heavily in the Cork Film Festival archive. She came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers and was often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham with whom she starred in the Confessions series of movies. Born in 1953, Linda Hayden was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977) and the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976). Controversially she appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith was the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith  – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. We have no information on Coomber but recognise Towb as the popular actor from Northern Ireland who was familiar on screen as well as stage. He began his acting career travelling with theatrical groups on both sides of the border and following a move to London in the early 1950s his presence on the British stage was cemented, in particular with his work at the National Theatre. The film critic Eric Shorter wrote of him: “Towb was one of the gentlest, most imaginative and thoughtful actors of his generation… He was always on the stage if he could afford it – taking television and film work to balance out his income.” (The Guardian, 30.07.2009.) The stairway is marked with the Aer Lingus logo and we might guess that this picture was taken at Cork Airport. Philbin in large sunglasses, is standing on the stairway, wearing a white suit accessorised with a sash marked ‘CFI Movie Girl.’ She is accompanied by her sister and others identified as Jack O'Sullivan, Brian Coomber, Mary O'Keeffe, Charlie Cullinane and Fergus Gilligan. In 2015 a former Miss Movie Girl competitor, Catherine Tracy, was tracked down and invited to attend that years film festival as a guest of honour. She remembered her time in the Miss Movie Girl competition fondly and recalled meeting the French film director François Truffaut along with the blues guitar legend Rory Gallagher and the English actor Trevor Howard who were in Cork in that year.
