Hennessy, on the left, with a drink in hand, looks up somewhat forlornly to the camera. His companions, also holding drinks, pose for the camera in front of gilt-framed art work adorning the walls behind them. (This might be the same drinks reception attended by the poet John Montague in a similarly uncredited photo and can be viewed in the archive by clicking on Montague’s ‘tag’ below.) Charlie Hennessy, a senior partner of JW O’Donovan Solicitors on Cork’s South Mall, made a tremendous contribution to the Cork Film Festival. On his death in 2008, Mick Hannigan, the then festival director, noted that Hennessy’s contribution to the cultural life of Cork was immense. Along with Dermot Breen, Hennessy was involved with the film festival since its inception in 1956. He was its chairperson for twenty-one years from 1985 to 2005 and continued to work for the festival, and for the Cork Opera House, attending board meeting up until his death, age 77. Hennessy attended the Presentation Brothers College on the Mardyke, playing rugby for his school and University College Cork. As well as sport, and the film festival, his interest in the arts included involvement with the Presentation Theatre Guild, Cork Operatic Society, the Gilbert and Sullivan group and the Southern Theatre Group. Hennessy was a member of the Arts Council from 1998 to 1993. The photo shows the Opera House lit up in neon lights advertising the film festival. The long exposure of the shot lights up the light trails of the traffic along Lavitts Quay on the right. While this photo is marked 1980s the large gorilla probably references the imagery of the 1994 Cork Film Festival, for which the artist Kieran O'Connor designed a poster and programme cover showing 'King Kong' standing on top of the Shandon Bells & Tower of St Anne's Church in Shandon, Cork. The façade of the Opera House has changed since this photo was taken and in 2003 renovation works on the façade of the building and the surrounding Emmet Place were completed. Emmet Place, at the entrance to the Opera House, has since been redeveloped into a plaza-like square. The fly-tower, seen behind the neon sign in this photo, is still in place however. For many years it provided the backdrop to the iconic Toyota roof sign which occupied 3 sides of the tower on the north, east and west. The Toyota sign has since been replaced by UCC signage in a new collaboration with UCC and the old Toyota letters, at 1.5 metres tall, were recommissioned by the Greek artist Bill Balaskas whose work 'Red Air' transformed the six Toyota letters into a public art installation. The film festival moved to the Opera House in the mid-eighties whilst under the stewardship of Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan, after negotiations with the Opera House manager Dick Hill. Around this time Charlie Hennessy, the festival chairman, secured funding from Ford Ireland, just before it closed down, providing the festival with an injection of funding along with the Irish Film Board and RTÉ. In 1985 the festival opened at the Opera House offering Cork an alternative 1000-seated venue for its screenings. They are posing amidst the roof-top detritus of abandoned steel poles and advertising hoarding while below them the hustle and bustle of city life continues. One of the girls sits on the wall parapet while the other leans insouciantly against a hoarding pole; they seem to be on the roof of the 60-foot fly-tower of the Opera House. They are both wearing dark-coloured tops, with the festival logo for the 41st Cork International Film Festival which took place in October 1996, which helps us date this photo. The Cork Opera House was conceived in 1852, following the Cork Exhibition, and opened in 1855. The building was originally called the ‘Athenaeum’ and eventually renamed Cork Opera House in 1877. It burnt down in 1955 and was reopened by President Éamon de Valera in October 1965. In this reconstruction, it retained a somewhat bleak wall of brick, with the equally bleak fly-tower used to accommodate scene changes. In 2003 renovation works on the façade of the building, and the surrounding Emmet Place, was completed but did not impact upon the fly-tower. The fly-tower infamously provided the backdrop to the iconic Toyota roof sign which occupied 3 sides of the tower on the north, east, and west. In 2019 the Toyota sign was replaced by UCC signage in a new collaboration with UCC, and the old Toyota letters, at 1.5 metres tall, were recommissioned by the Greek artist <a href="https://www.billbalaskas.com/">Bill Balaskas</a>. Balaskas transformed the six Toyota letters into a public art installation called 'Red Air'. Title A name given to the resource Frank Sanquest and Dermot Breen in conversation Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Frank Sanquest, Dermot Breen Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the festival director, Dermot Breen, in conversation with the artist and journalist Frank Sanquest. Breen, with a cigarette in hand, was a colleague of Sanquest for many years – they would have come across each other in Cork through their involvement with the theatre. For example, when the Cork Opera House burnt down in 1954 the Palace theatre, then managed by Dermot Breen, stepped in offering its stage to the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was then set-designer for the Cork Opera House and the Cork Operatic Society. By the late fifties Breen gave up managing the theatre in order to run the film festival and his job at the Palace was taken over by Dan Donovan. Frank Sanquest was also a journalist for the then Cork Examiner and worked as its arts editor from 1940 to 1987. He was the father of five children with his wife Rose, including the artist Kevin Sanquest and the writer Rosalind (Roz) Crowley. In 2009 Kevin Sanquest created a national portrait collection in Fota House, Carrigtwohill, Cork, titled Inheritance – Honouring the Cork Legacy; he passed away in 2013. Interestingly Kevin Sanquest was the first manager of the Cork music legend Rory Gallagher and the band Taste. His sister, the journalist and author Roz Crowley, refers to the legacy of Rory Gallagher in her book Macroom Mountain Dew – Memories of Ireland’s First Rock Festival (OnStream Publications Ltd., 2016).
