Dan Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. It is possible that this picture was taken in the 1970s when the celebrated Jamaican playwright and film director Trevor Rhone came to Cork with his Jamaican colleagues. By then Rhone had released his successful film, co-written with Perry Henzell, The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972). His later film, Smile Orange (Rhone, 1975), went on the win a gold medal at the Cork Film Festival in 1975. The Lord Mayor Seán French, wearing his chain of office, is seated behind Hemmings next to the former Lord Mayor Gus Healy. Some of the other nine delegates are provisionally identified at the back of the photo as the Everyman Theatre founder, and Presentation Brothers College (PBC) teacher, Dan Donovan, Teddy O’Brien, festival director Dermot Breen, and Dorinda Coomber.  David Hemmings was an English actor, director, and producer who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer (which might have been based on David Bailey), in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). His filmography includes The Charge of the Light Brigade (Tony Richardson, 1968), Alfred the Great (Clive Donner, 1969) (which was filmed in Ireland), Juggernaut (Richard Lester, 1974), with Richard Harris and Omar Sharif, and the gangster movie The Squeeze (Michael Apted, 1977) with Stacy Keach and Edward Fox. Distracted by television roles and running his company, Hemdale Corporation, during the 1980s, his credits include Magnum PI, Airwolf, The A-Team, and Quantum Leap. By the 2000s his return to film was well-received and included the role of ‘Cassius’ in Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000), and the role of ‘Lenny’ in the poignant Last Orders (2001), alongside Tom Courtenay and Michael Caine, which was shown at the 46th edition of the Cork Film Festival in 2001. His role in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (2003), with Sean Connery, was one his final roles before his unexpected death in Romania in 2003, age 62, whilst filming the British-Romanian horror film Blessed (a.k.a.Samantha’s Child) (Simon Fellows, 2004) with Heather Graham and James Purefoy. We also note that he had a minor role in the film St Joan (1957), based on the George Bernard play, directed by Austrain-born director Otto Preminger, who came to the film festival with Jean Seberg in the late 1950s. Title A name given to the resource Frank Sanquest and Dermot Breen in conversation Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Frank Sanquest, Dermot Breen Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the festival director, Dermot Breen, in conversation with the artist and journalist Frank Sanquest. Breen, with a cigarette in hand, was a colleague of Sanquest for many years – they would have come across each other in Cork through their involvement with the theatre. For example, when the Cork Opera House burnt down in 1954 the Palace theatre, then managed by Dermot Breen, stepped in offering its stage to the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was then set-designer for the Cork Opera House and the Cork Operatic Society. By the late fifties Breen gave up managing the theatre in order to run the film festival and his job at the Palace was taken over by Dan Donovan. Frank Sanquest was also a journalist for the then Cork Examiner and worked as its arts editor from 1940 to 1987. He was the father of five children with his wife Rose, including the artist Kevin Sanquest and the writer Rosalind (Roz) Crowley. In 2009 Kevin Sanquest created a national portrait collection in Fota House, Carrigtwohill, Cork, titled Inheritance – Honouring the Cork Legacy; he passed away in 2013. Interestingly Kevin Sanquest was the first manager of the Cork music legend Rory Gallagher and the band Taste. His sister, the journalist and author Roz Crowley, refers to the legacy of Rory Gallagher in her book Macroom Mountain Dew – Memories of Ireland’s First Rock Festival (OnStream Publications Ltd., 2016). Donovan, holding a festival brochure dated 1972, is smiling broadly as he reaches out to shake Audley’s hand. Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. Donovan was also an actor and a beloved teacher at the Presentation Brothers College in Cork, where he taught for almost 40 years, and whose theatre is named after him. In 2008 the Everyman, in association with Collins Press, published Dan Donovan: An Everyman’s Life to mark his 80th birthday. He died, age 92, in 2008. At the time of this picture, in 1972, Maxine Audley (1923-1992) had just completed her final film role in Running Scared (David Hemmings, 1972). Running Scared was directed and co-written by David Hemmings who also came to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. Audley was an English stage and film actor who consistently worked in theatre to high acclaim. She toured with the Old Vic and worked in the West End and Stratford with John Gielgud, Kenneth Tynan, and Peter Brook. Audley also worked in television, radio and over 20 films, including Charlie Chaplin’s satirical comedy A King in New York (1957), which also starred the English actor Dawn Addams who came to the Cork festival in its early days. Marcus on the left, with his distinctive glasses and beard, is turned slightly towards his companion, engaged in conversation. They are seated amongst a convivial crowd, drinking and smoking, at tables made from empty beer kegs with umbrellas used for cover. Louis Marcus was born in Cork City to an Irish Jewish family. His grandfather Louis Roseberg came to Cork in 1882, from Akmian, North of Lithuania, fleeing persecution from the Russian Empire. Cork Jews were often referred to as Akmajianites. Marcus began his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1965) and would continue to work on Gael-Linn documentaries until 1973. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1974 for Children at Work (Páisti ag Obair), and in 1976 he was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards for Conquest of Light (1976) which detailed how Waterford Glass is made with an emphasis on the aesthetic nature of the process. Marcus is a member of Aosdána (the Irish Association of Artists limited to 250 individuals, founded in 1981 by Charles Haughey) and an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 2011 he was awarded a special prize for his outstanding work in the Irish language at the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI) Annual Meeting of Directors including Oliver Hirschbeigel, Dearbhla Walsh, Lenny Abrahamson and Ciaran Donnelly. His first documentary film <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prizewinners at the Cork Film Festival for some years. The Silent Art (18 mins.) was shown at the festival in 1959, with music by Bernard Geary and Declan Townsend, and commentary by festival stalwart Dan Donovan.
