The delegates are not identified but we recognise the English actor Linda Hayden standing at the foot of the Aer Lingus stairway with Breen. Nearby two members of the British Airways cabin crew stand close by – they are wearing a uniform designed by Sir Hardy Amies (1909-2003), official dressmaker to the Queen. This particular uniform was introduced in 1972 and replaced in 1977 which helps us date this picture, dated 1970s, further. The English actor David Hemmings stands at the bottom left of the photo with his arm around an unidentified delegate. Behind him, in a light coloured dress, his then partner Prudence de Casembroot, is seen looking off into the distance. Both Linda Hayden and David Hemmings were stars of British cinema during the 1970s. Above them on the stairway, a contingent of festival delegates, a few of whom are wearing festival ribbons on their lapel, pose for the camera. The airport is not identified but we suggest the background might be of the pier building at Dublin Airport. The Lord Mayor Seán French, wearing his chain of office, is seated behind Hemmings next to the former Lord Mayor Gus Healy. Some of the other nine delegates are provisionally identified at the back of the photo as the Everyman Theatre founder, and Presentation Brothers College (PBC) teacher, Dan Donovan, Teddy O’Brien, festival director Dermot Breen, and Dorinda Coomber.  David Hemmings was an English actor, director, and producer who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer (which might have been based on David Bailey), in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). His filmography includes The Charge of the Light Brigade (Tony Richardson, 1968), Alfred the Great (Clive Donner, 1969) (which was filmed in Ireland), Juggernaut (Richard Lester, 1974), with Richard Harris and Omar Sharif, and the gangster movie The Squeeze (Michael Apted, 1977) with Stacy Keach and Edward Fox. Distracted by television roles and running his company, Hemdale Corporation, during the 1980s, his credits include Magnum PI, Airwolf, The A-Team, and Quantum Leap. By the 2000s his return to film was well-received and included the role of ‘Cassius’ in Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000), and the role of ‘Lenny’ in the poignant Last Orders (2001), alongside Tom Courtenay and Michael Caine, which was shown at the 46th edition of the Cork Film Festival in 2001. His role in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (2003), with Sean Connery, was one his final roles before his unexpected death in Romania in 2003, age 62, whilst filming the British-Romanian horror film Blessed (a.k.a.Samantha’s Child) (Simon Fellows, 2004) with Heather Graham and James Purefoy. We also note that he had a minor role in the film St Joan (1957), based on the George Bernard play, directed by Austrain-born director Otto Preminger, who came to the film festival with Jean Seberg in the late 1950s. Wild, with his distinctive long hair and a festival ribbon pinned to his open-neck shirt, would have been around 20 years old in this picture. Jack Wild was best known for his role as the Artful Dodger in Oliver! (Carol Reed, 1968) which also starred Oliver Reed and Harry Secombe. Wild received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Oliver! and went on to work in TV and film including an episode of The Onedin Line (1972) with Peter Gilmore, who also came to the Cork festival.  In 1971 Wilde starred alongside Daniel Latimer and Tracy Hyde in Melody (Warrin Hussein, 1971) written by Alan Parker and produced by David Puttnam - who now lives in West Cork. Following Melody Wild starred in The 14 (1973), directed by David Hemmings who was a visitor to the festival around the same time as Wild. Wild, however, never replicated the success of his debut role in Oliver! and, following a life of health and personal issues, died from cancer, age 53, in 2006. Donovan, holding a festival brochure dated 1972, is smiling broadly as he reaches out to shake Audley’s hand. Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. Donovan was also an actor and a beloved teacher at the Presentation Brothers College in Cork, where he taught for almost 40 years, and whose theatre is named after him. In 2008 the Everyman, in association with Collins Press, published Dan Donovan: An Everyman’s Life to mark his 80th birthday. He died, age 92, in 2008. At the time of this picture, in 1972, Maxine Audley (1923-1992) had just completed her final film role in Running Scared (David Hemmings, 1972). Running Scared was directed and co-written by David Hemmings who also came to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. Audley was an English stage and film actor who consistently worked in theatre to high acclaim. She toured with the Old Vic and worked in the West End and Stratford with John Gielgud, Kenneth Tynan, and Peter Brook. Audley also worked in television, radio and over 20 films, including Charlie Chaplin’s satirical comedy A King in New York (1957), which also starred the English actor Dawn Addams who came to the Cork festival in its early days.
