Sweeney (1909-1991) was an RTÉ radio broadcaster and producer; the RTÉ archives notes that he started work with RTÉ in the 1950s and was a producer on RTÉ Radio's Sunday Miscellany for many years. He is shown in this photo wearing a dark suit and holding a microphone close up towards Addams, who is caught in mid-conversation with him. Addams is wearing a light-coloured dress tied at the waist and is shown resting her right elbow on the table next to her, which also holds the recording equipment. In her left hand she holds a cigarette and wears a small watch at her wrist. Addams had an illustrious and somewhat controversial relationship with the film festival. Due in part she admitted years later to the advice of her publicist advising her to court publicity. In particular her request, during the 1957 film festival, for a milk bath at the at the Cork Metropole Hotel caused much commotion in the press; it was shot down by the manager of the hotel, Douglas Vance, because "the people of Cork are finding it hard to make ends meet." The thirteen guests, all of whom are smiling for the camera, sit on either side of a long table with the Fianna Fáil politician, Gus Healy, seated at its head. The wooden table is adorned with candlesticks and the guests are having soup and a roll served on patterned tableware.  The identified guest, Barbara Vance, was the wife of Douglas Vance, the manager of the Metropole Hotel located on MacCurtain Street, Cork. The Metropole was designed by the architect Arthur Hill and was opened in 1897. The hotel was originally run by Jimmy Musgrave, after whom Musgrave (now Irish Independent) Park was named for his dedication to Rugby. Until the mid-1950s it was known as Ireland's finest 'dry hotel' because the owners, the Musgraves, believed alcohol should not be served; the ban was lifted in 1956 at the behest of the manager Douglas Vance - just in time for the first Cork film festival. The hotel occupied the upper floors of the building with the ground floor and basement let out for retail. Two shops on either side of the entrance included the famous Turkish Delight sweet shop Hadji Bey run by Harutan Batmazian who came to Cork from Armenia in 1903. Lawson's Outfitters occupied the other unit and the name can still be seen on the hotel's façade today. Edward VII supposedly took high tea on the roof of the hotel when he visited Cork in 1903 for the Great Exhibition of Cork. Douglas Vance took over the running of Metropole Hotel in 1944 and made headlines around the world when he refused a request from the English actor Dawn Addams for a bath to be filled with milk, noting that the Cork people would be appalled since they found it hard to make ends meet at the time. They are smiling and shaking hands as he passes her the award. Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork Film Festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades Addams worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly, 1952), the then controversial, The Moon is Blue (Otto Preminger, 1953), and A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) starring Charlie Chaplin which was screened at the Cork Film Festival that year. Jack Lynch (1917-1999) would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. At the time of this picture (marked as 1957) he served as Minister for Education and Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs. Dawn Addams married Prince Massimo, from the princely house of Massimo, historically one of the great aristocratic families of Rome and major patrons of the arts, in 1954. By all accounts they had a tumultuous relationship and by 1959 Addams sought a divorce which was only granted in 1971 due to strict catholic-influenced Italian laws. Behind them we can make out the festival director Dermot Breen with his head bowed down as he leaves the car which is parked kerb-side. A jostling crowd surrounds the car and actors, some reaching out towards them. The photo was taken in 1957, the year that Dawn Addams played alongside Charlie Chaplin in the film A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) which was screened at the festival that year. Wearing a light-coloured summer dress accessorised with a coloured headband tied into her dark hair, Addams is facing the river and smiling as she casts the fishing rod overhead. On the ground by her feet lies an open tin-can probably used for bait. She might be reeling in the line as we can see a fish swinging at its end, while above in the clear sky a solitary gull passes over. Across the river, we can see a detached two-story building, originally the Christian Brother's School, located at the end of Sullivan's Quay. We can just make out the start of the inscription on the wall at the junction with Sober Lane: 'Founded A.D. 1828'. In the distance, on the far right, the Gothic spires of Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral rise above the horizon beyond the stone facade of the South Gate Bridge, which links the south side of Cork to the city centre. Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork Film Festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades, she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly, 1952), the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (Otto Preminger, 1953), A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) which was screened at the Cork Film Festival that year, as well as the television series The Saint (1962-69) with Roger Moore as Simon Templar. Addams had a tumultuous personal life and her marriage to Prince Don Vittorio Emanuele Massimo of Roccasecca in 1954, when she was age 23 and he 43, was the subject of a cover story in Life magazine. She separated from Prince Massimo some four years later although divorce was not granted by the Italian courts until 1971 after which she married Jimmy White.
