This photo was taken in 1957, the year that Dawn Addams played alongside Charlie Chaplin in the film A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) which was screened at the festival. She had an illustrious and somewhat controversial relationship with the film festival. Due in part she admitted years later to the advice of her publicist advising her to court publicity. In particular her request, during the 1957 film festival, for a milk bath at the at the Cork Metropole Hotel caused much commotion in the press; it was shot down by the manager of the hotel, Douglas Vance, because "the people of Cork are finding it hard to make ends meet" (Independent, 09.11.2012). Her vivacious personality must have been a joy to capture by the photographers of the day as is evident from the many photos of her in the archive. Jack Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. At the time of this picture (marked as 1957) he served as Minister for Education and Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs. He is also played Gaelic sports for Cork and is regarded as one of the greatest dual players of all-time. Otto Preminger (1905-1986) was born in Austria-Hungary but fled to Austria with his family after the breakout of the first World War. He went on to work for Fox Studios in Los Angeles and was known for defying the censorship code of Hollywood with his controversial films. He directed more than 35 feature films including the Oscar-nominated The Moon is Blue (1953) with the English actor Dawn Addams who was a frequent visitor to the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s. In this picture, Preminger is being presented with a silver-plated single-column trophy engraved with the Cork coat of arms on the front. While we cannot see the detail in this picture, we know from <a href="https://corkfilmfest.ucc.ie/items/show/206">another image</a> in the archive that the award is topped with a film reel and that a film ribbon motif is replicated at various levels of the column. Donovan, holding a festival brochure dated 1972, is smiling broadly as he reaches out to shake Audley’s hand. Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. Donovan was also an actor and a beloved teacher at the Presentation Brothers College in Cork, where he taught for almost 40 years, and whose theatre is named after him. In 2008 the Everyman, in association with Collins Press, published Dan Donovan: An Everyman’s Life to mark his 80th birthday. He died, age 92, in 2008. At the time of this picture, in 1972, Maxine Audley (1923-1992) had just completed her final film role in Running Scared (David Hemmings, 1972). Running Scared was directed and co-written by David Hemmings who also came to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. Audley was an English stage and film actor who consistently worked in theatre to high acclaim. She toured with the Old Vic and worked in the West End and Stratford with John Gielgud, Kenneth Tynan, and Peter Brook. Audley also worked in television, radio and over 20 films, including Charlie Chaplin’s satirical comedy A King in New York (1957), which also starred the English actor Dawn Addams who came to the Cork festival in its early days. For the next two decades she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly 1952), and the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (1953) which was directed by Otto Preminger. In this picture Preminger, in a dark suit and bow-tie, is walking purposefully towards the cinema accompanied by two others. A small crowd gathers around Preminger and entourage, and a young girl is caught at the kerb-side looking back over her left shoulder towards the camera. She is wearing a light-coloured dress and a dark jacket, her short hair tousled by the wind. Further behind Preminger, we can see a slice of life on the main thoroughfare that is Patrick Street. Directly behind him, in the distance on Winthrop Street, we can just about make out the crowds gathered outside the now shut Lee Cinema next door to the limestone façade of the Cash & Co. department store (now Brown Thomas). The Lee Cinema was closed in December 1920 after the 'Burning of Cork' and reopened in September 1921, finally shutting down in April 1989. Beyond the crowds, we can glimpse the Cork General Post Office at the junction of Winthrop Street and Oliver Plunkett Street. She is shown looking directly at the camera wide-eyed and lips parted. Addams (1930-1985) was very much a Hollywood star in the 1950s and her visit to Cork during this era was a highlight for the festival and the press. In particular her request, during the 1957 film festival, for a milk bath at the at the Cork Metropole Hotel caused much consternation. The request was shot down by the then manager of the hotel, Douglas Vance, because "the people of Cork are finding it hard to make ends meet" (Independent, 09.11.2012). Her vivacious personality must have been a joy to capture by the photographers of the day as is evident from the many photos of her in the archive.
