O’Donnell, in dark-rimmed glasses, might be the legendary Cork publican Brian O’Donnell of the tiny Hi-B bar on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork. Infamously he would throw you out of his bar, located at the top of a somewhat dilapidated staircase, if you took a call on your phone or caused him consternation in any way. O’Donnell died in 2019 attracting warm tributes from Cork and beyond. She has a prolific film career and films include Cleopatra (Joseph Mankiewicz,1962) when she was age 16, with Elizabeth Taylor; Krull (Peter Yates, 1983), Dune (David Lynch, 1984) and the directorial debut by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon (1986). At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) directed by the Polish-French film director Roman Polanski, whose wife, Sharon Tate, had been murdered recently in Hollywood by the Charles Manson family.  Annis is shown in this picture with Ferdy Mayne, who also worked with Polanski in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate whom Polanski married the following year. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968), and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams, who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. Elsner’s long-standing career ended only with her death in 2019, age 77. In the early 1970s Elsner appeared in The Stuff That Dreams are Made Of (Alfred Vohrer, 1972) and the German drama film Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with the German actor Ferdy Mayne, who also came to the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Elsner is best remembered in Germany for playing the title role of Inspector Lea Sommer, in a long-running German TV series Die Kommissarin (The Inspector) which ran from 1994 to 2006. Title A name given to the resource German actor Ferdy Mayne with Michael Twomey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Ferdy Mayne, Michael Twomey Description An account of the resource <ol start="346"></ol> This is a black and white photo of the German-born actor Ferdy Mayne on stage with the Irish actor Michael Twomey.  Mayne on the left of this photo, with his distinctive dark eye brows, is speaking into the microphone while Twomey looks on, papers in hand. Born in Cork, Michael Twomey (1933-2017) grew up on the Mardyke and attended the Presentation Brothers College. Twomey will be remembered in Cork, and beyond, for his two-hander Cha and Miah with his friend Frank Duggan on the RTÉ television show Hall’s Pictorial Weekly. His other stage work included work with the playwright John B Keane for whom he played in many of his productions, including Many Young Men of Twenty, The Year of the Hiker and Sharon’s Grave. He gave his last stage performance as in 2015 two years before his death. In 2013, along with Frank Duggan and Billa O’Connell, Twomey was awarded the Freedom of Cork City for his “unwavering lifetime contribution to professional and amateur theatre, arts, drama and song.” (The Irish Times, 09.09.2017) The actor Ferdinand ‘Ferdy’ Mayne, was born in Germany in 1916. Being a Jew, he was sent to England from Germany as a child to stay with his aunt and later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Old Vic School. A fluent German speaker he was in demand for propaganda broadcasts during the Second World War and supposedly operated as an informant for the M15. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career. His stage work includes the role of Max in the long-running Rodgers and Hammerstein production The Sound of Music. Helen Shapiro, in a white blouse and embroidered top accessorised with a festival ribbon, was a singing sensation in her day. Born in East London in 1946, she was a British singer whose repertoire included the blues, jazz, gospel and pop music. By the age of 15 she was England’s top recording star with You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness earning her two gold discs. She toured and performed with the Beatles; John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song Misery for her but her then-management refused to let her record it. Shapiro’s film career was brief and she played herself in Play It Cool (Michael Winner,1962) and the lead female role in Its Trad, Dad! directed by Richard Lester (1962) who went on to direct the Beatles’ film Hard Day’s Night (1964). Her stage career includes the West End play Oliver by Lionel Bart and the part of Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Later she toured with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band between 1984 and 2001, as well as touring with her one-woman show Simply Shapiro.
