They are probably at the Harp Lager-sponsored festival club and, as with the convivial crowd around them, they drink and chat, cigarette in hand. Helen Shapiro, in a white blouse and embroidered top accessorised with a festival ribbon, was a singing sensation in her day. Born in East London in 1946, she was a British singer whose repertoire included the blues, jazz, gospel and pop music. By the age of 15 she was England’s top recording star with You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness earning her two gold discs. She toured and performed with the Beatles; John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song Misery for her but her then-management refused to let her record it. Shapiro’s film career was brief and she played herself in Play It Cool (Michael Winner,1962) and the lead female role in Its Trad, Dad! directed by Richard Lester (1962) who went on to direct the Beatles’ film Hard Day’s Night (1964). Her stage career includes the West End play Oliver by Lionel Bart and the part of Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Later she toured with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band between 1984 and 2001, as well as touring with her one-woman show Simply Shapiro. Shapiro published her autobiography Walking Back to Happiness in 1993. Ferdy Mayne, on the right, cigar in hand, faces Breen as they chat. A festival ribbon is pinned to the left lapel of his jacket. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including head vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate; Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968); and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams (who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo). Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who also came to Cork around the same time as this photo. (While this photo is marked 1970 it is possibly 1972 based on other items in the archive.) His final film role was as General Karl von Weber in the neo-Nazi political thriller The Killers Within (Paul Leder, 1995) before he returned to England, where he died in 1998 following the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. Player and Wills were friends of the film festival and supported it on occasion with a development grant. While this picture appears to be taken at the festival club we know that Player and Wills sometimes held a reception for the festival at their factory headquarters on Dublin’s South Circular Road. The factory was constructed in 1935 for Player and Wills tobacco until its closure in 2005 when the company moved out of Ireland. The Player Wills site is regarded as one of the last remaining quality development sites in the city centre and, as of May 2020, is being considered for redevelopment into c. 400 new homes.    Both Vicki and Ann Michelle are English actors. Vicki Michelle (1950-), on the right in this photo, is best known for her work in the BBC television series ‘Allo ‘Allo. She has an extensive television and stage career appearing on Celebrity Masterchef (2008), Emmerdale (2007-2009), I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! (2014). She has also appeared on the Irish sketch show The Mario Rosenstock Show (2012). Michelle played alongside her sister, Ann Michelle (1952-), in The Virgin Witch (Ray Austin, 1971) which was rejected by the British Board of Film Censors before being passed with an X-rating. The cut version was released in 1972 around the time of this photograph. Ann Michelle also had a small role in the British horror-cult film Psychomania (aka The Death Wheelers) (Don Sharp, 1973) starring the Academy Award-winning George Sanders and Beryl Reid. Sanders (1906-1972) died by suicide soon after completing Psychomania. The convivial group are at the festival club, standing in front of a poster advertising the French-Belgian film Rendezvous at Bray (André Delvaux, 1971). Deirdre O’Callaghan is an international harpist and singer; she was married to the Irish athlete Noel Carroll from 1964 until his untimely death in 1998. Carroll was a middle-distance runner who competed for Ireland in the 1964 Toyko Olympics and the 1968 games in Mexico. He was one of the founders of the Dublin Marathon and the winner of the marathon now receives the Noel Carroll Memorial Trophy in his name. While the photo is marked 1968, the Rendezvous at Bray poster allows us to provisionally date the photo after the release of this film. Rendezvous at Bray starred the Danish-French actor Anna Karina (1940-2019) who acted in several films made by her ex-husband Jean-Luc Goddard, including A Woman Is a Woman (1961), My Life to Live (1962), and Band of Outsiders (1964) (with the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1MKUJN7vUk">iconic line-dance scene in the Parisian café with Sami Frey and Claude Brasseur</a>!). Karina also starred in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Chinese Roulette (1976) which he supposedly wrote for her. The archive has some film stills from Fassbinder’s Querelle (1982) with the actor Brad Davis and Günther Kaufmann – the sometimes lover of Fassbinder. Margaret Kerrigan, sitting on the far right next to David Kelly, was the wife of the labour politician Patrick Kerrigan, who served Cork as Lord Mayor from 1973 to 1974. He was nominated to the 13th Seanad by Liam Cosgrave, the then-Taoiseach, where he served until 1977. Kerrigan won a seat in the Cork City constituency in the 1977 general election and took his seat that year before dying two years later, age 51. They had four children, one of whom, Cathal Kerrigan, worked as a librarian in UCC for many years before his retirement in 2020. He recently collaborated with the Germany-based artist Padraig Robinson on his book Gaze Against Imperialism (Metaflux Publishing, 2019). The actor David Kelly appears in the archive on a number of occasions. Around the time of this photo, which is dated 1972 – but it might be 1973 or 1974 to coincide with the mayoralty of Patrick Kerrigan – Kelly had just completed the rarely seen 1973 British comedy film Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width (Ronnie Baxter, 1973) which also starred the Irish actor Joe Lynch (1925-2001). They are probably sitting under the Harp Lager-sponsored umbrella of the festival club and are chatting, drinking, and smoking as are the animated guests who sit at tables around them. Jon Finch, at the right of the photo in a leather jacket pulling on a cigarette, was an English film and stage actor born in 1942. He was a handsome in demand actor who achieved some notoriety for turning down plum roles when offered them due to a self-proclaimed lack of ambition, such as the chance to replace Sean Connery and play James Bond in Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton, 1973) (the part went to Roger Moore instead). In the early 1970s Finch played supporting roles in Hammer Horror productions The Horror of Frankenstein (Jimmy Sangster, 1970) and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) with Dawn Addams, a regular visitor to the Cork Film Festival in its earlier days, with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. But it was for his Shakespearean roles Finch would become well known. Most famously he played Macbeth in Macbeth (aka The Tragedy of Macbeth) (Roman Polanski, 1971) alongside his companion in this picture, Francesca Annis, as Lady Macbeth. Finch also starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy (1972) as well the BBC television productions Richard II (1978), Henry IV, parts one and two (1979), and as Don Pedro in the BBC’s Much Ado About Nothing (1984). His final film role was in the historical drama Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott, 2005) alongside Orlando Bloom and Eva Green. Finch died in 2012, age 71. Francesca Annis, chatting to her companion in this picture, is also an English film and stage actor with a prolific film career. At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) with Jon Finch, directed by Roman Polanski, whose wife Sharon Tate had recently been murdered in Hollywood by followers of Charles Manson. The film was financed by the Playboy magazine editor Hugh Hefner as mainstream studios refused to finance it given Polanski’s mental state and yet, despite its critical mauling at the time, the film has gone on to garner plaudits for its somewhat accurate depiction of a bleak violent world. At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) directed by the Polish-French film director Roman Polanski, whose wife, Sharon Tate, had been murdered recently in Hollywood by the Charles Manson family.  Annis is shown in this picture with Ferdy Mayne, who also worked with Polanski in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate whom Polanski married the following year. The photo identifies the producer Greg Smith, William (Bill) Harpur, former film censor Sheamus Smith, Sheila Hampson, and Hillary O’Herlihy, the wife of Bill O’Herlihy. They are standing together, drink in hand, some smiling for the camera. Sheamus Smith, wearing his distinctive glasses, stands on the left. Smith started working as a cameraman at the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) in 1961 before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. The following decade he was appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). He published his memoir Off Screen (Gill and MacMillan) in 2007. The producer Greg Smith (1939-2009), in a light-coloured jacket, stands on the far right of the photo. Smith owned a talent agency in London where he signed on the Irish film-maker Norman Cohen with whom turned a series of risqué best-selling paperback books, by Christopher Wood, into a successful run of ‘confessions’ movies including Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). He went on to produce Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977), starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham who was also at the Cork Film Festival. Hillary O’Herlihy was married to the Cork-born, Glasheen-raised, RTÉ television broadcaster, and Irish Film Board Chairman Bill O’Herlihy. O’Herlihy (1938-2015) was a household name best known for his sports coverage, along with co-presenters Eamon Dunphy and John Giles, on programmes such as Sunday Sport and Sports Stadium and in his time presented 10 FIFA World Cups and 10 Summer Olympic Games. He was a keen cinephile and brought this to his work at the Irish Film Board. O’Herlihy promoted the film industry and in particular, was keen to develop filming in rural Ireland. He also worked for some time as PR for the Cork Film Festival where he emphasised the focus on Irish film.
