The Fine Gael politician Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, and judge who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-1973. He studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. A bespectacled Smith is standing on the far left, in a light-coloured suit, striped shirt and holding a cigarette and glass in his right hand slightly raised. He is standing next to Hampson, wearing a dark dress and a glass held in her clasped hands. On the far right Harpur, in a tweed jacket, smiles at the camera, his glass also raised. Sheamus Smith had an illustrious career with RTÉ and beyond. He started out as a photojournalist for the now defunct Dublin paper Evening Press before moving to Canada to study film and television. He returned to Ireland in 1961 to join the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) starting as a cameraman before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. The following decade he was appointed Managing Director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). The RTÉ archives remind us that Smith was present at the assassination of Indira Ghandi in October 1984. She was on her way to meet with Sheamus Smith and Rory O'Farrell in her New Delhi garden when she was shot dead by her bodyguards in front of Smith. An interview that Ghandi had made with the Irish broadcaster, Marian Finucane, had been recorded three months earlier and was broadcast that October in a special edition of <a href="https://www.rte.ie/archives/2014/1031/655796-indira-ghandi-born-into-politics/">The Woman's Programme</a> dedicated to Indira Ghandi. O’Donnell, in dark-rimmed glasses, might be the legendary Cork publican Brian O’Donnell of the tiny Hi-B bar on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork. Infamously he would throw you out of his bar, located at the top of a somewhat dilapidated staircase, if you took a call on your phone or caused him consternation in any way. O’Donnell died in 2019 attracting warm tributes from Cork and beyond. Francesca Annis is an English film and stage actor born in 1945 who began acting when she was a teenager. She has a prolific film career and films include Cleopatra (Joseph Mankiewicz,1962) when she was age 16, with Elizabeth Taylor; Krull (Peter Yates, 1983), Dune (David Lynch, 1984) and the directorial debut by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon (1986). At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) directed by the Polish-French film director Roman Polanski, whose wife, Sharon Tate, had been murdered recently in Hollywood by the Charles Manson family.  Annis is shown in this picture with Ferdy Mayne, who also worked with Polanski in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate whom Polanski married the following year. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968), and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams, who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. The back of the photo identifies only Gerry Jones but we recognise the film festival director Dermot Breen, Frank Poole and the lady (who might be his wife) from other photos in the archive. The convivial gathering are all smiling looking up at the camera. On the far left a bespectacled Poole is smiling up at the camera seated next to Dermot Breen who is half-turned towards him. Frank Poole was a managing director of Rank Film Productions, London during the 1960s until his retirement in the late 1970s. The Rank Organisation was a British film company whose contract players made regular appearances at the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s in particular. On the far right Gerry Jones, with a distinctive dark eye-patch over his right eye, is seated looking down towards the table. Jones might be considered an incongruous addition to the group; he was a Dublin business man who was a notable figure of 1970s Ireland when he stood by the then Taoiseach Charles Haughey during the 1970 'Arms Trial'. The trial involved the indictment, and ultimate acquittal, of Haughey and his colleague Neil Blaney for the alleged involvement in a conspiracy to smuggle arms to the IRA in Northern Ireland. In 2001 the Irish Independent reported that secret British papers released by the Public Record Office in London noted that all twelve jurors at the time had been contacted by Gerry Jones (since deceased) in order to intimidate them but this was not substantiated ('Jones 'tracked arms trial jurors', Irish Independent, 19.04.2001). Player and Wills were friends of the film festival and supported it on occasion with a development grant. While this picture appears to be taken at the festival club we know that Player and Wills sometimes held a reception for the festival at their factory headquarters on Dublin’s South Circular Road. The factory was constructed in 1935 for Player and Wills tobacco until its closure in 2005 when the company moved out of Ireland. The Player Wills site is regarded as one of the last remaining quality development sites in the city centre and, as of May 2020, is being considered for redevelopment into c. 400 new homes.    Both Vicki and Ann Michelle are English actors. Vicki Michelle (1950-), on the right in this photo, is best known for her work in the BBC television series ‘Allo ‘Allo. She has an extensive television and stage career appearing on Celebrity Masterchef (2008), Emmerdale (2007-2009), I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! (2014). Deirdre O’Callaghan is an international harpist and singer; she was married to the Irish athlete Noel Carroll from 1964 until his untimely death in 1998. Carroll was a middle-distance runner who competed for Ireland in the 1964 Toyko Olympics and the 1968 games in Mexico. He was one of the founders of the Dublin Marathon and the winner of the marathon now receives the Noel Carroll Memorial Trophy in his name. While the photo is marked 1968, the Rendezvous at Bray poster allows us to provisionally date the photo after the release of this film. Rendezvous at Bray starred the Danish-French actor Anna Karina (1940-2019) who acted in several films made by her ex-husband Jean-Luc Goddard, including A Woman Is a Woman (1961), My Life to Live (1962), and Band of Outsiders (1964) (with the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1MKUJN7vUk">iconic line-dance scene in the Parisian café with Sami Frey and Claude Brasseur</a>!). Karina also starred in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Chinese Roulette (1976) which he supposedly wrote for her. The archive has some film stills from Fassbinder’s Querelle (1982) with the actor Brad Davis and Günther Kaufmann – the sometimes lover of Fassbinder. Byrne is standing next to Peters who is sitting on a beer key, wearing a white fur jacket over a dark dress, and drinking a pint of Guinness. On her right O’Shaughnessy, in a long white dress, poses decorously holding onto the large promotional umbrella. Grace O’Shaughnessy was a top Irish model in the 1960s based in Dublin. In 1966, when working in the Lebanon as a secretary, she was named as the ‘Ideal Woman of Europe’ in an Italian competition. She worked with the fashion designers Sybil Connolly, Ib Jorgensen and Nellie Mulcahy. She returned to Ireland and set up a modelling agency, as well as working as a fashion TV presenter for RTÉ during the 1970s and 1980s. She has been an ambassador for Women’s Aid, and for Third Age which is dedicated to the well-being of older people. Her companion in this picture is Mollie (sometimes known as Molly) Peters born in 1939. Peters was the stage name of Vivien Humphrey, who grew up in Suffolk, England. She started out as a model for men’s magazines but achieved cult cinema status for appearing as the sensuous Nurse Fearing, opposite Sean Connery's 007, in the first Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965).
