The convivial group are at the festival club, standing in front of a poster advertising the French-Belgian film Rendezvous at Bray (André Delvaux, 1971). Deirdre O’Callaghan is an international harpist and singer; she was married to the Irish athlete Noel Carroll from 1964 until his untimely death in 1998. Carroll was a middle-distance runner who competed for Ireland in the 1964 Toyko Olympics and the 1968 games in Mexico. He was one of the founders of the Dublin Marathon and the winner of the marathon now receives the Noel Carroll Memorial Trophy in his name. While the photo is marked 1968, the Rendezvous at Bray poster allows us to provisionally date the photo after the release of this film. Rendezvous at Bray starred the Danish-French actor Anna Karina (1940-2019) who acted in several films made by her ex-husband Jean-Luc Goddard, including A Woman Is a Woman (1961), My Life to Live (1962), and Band of Outsiders (1964) (with the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1MKUJN7vUk">iconic line-dance scene in the Parisian café with Sami Frey and Claude Brasseur</a>!). Karina also starred in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Chinese Roulette (1976) which he supposedly wrote for her. The archive has some film stills from Fassbinder’s Querelle (1982) with the actor Brad Davis and Günther Kaufmann – the sometimes lover of Fassbinder. Byrne is standing next to Peters who is sitting on a beer key, wearing a white fur jacket over a dark dress, and drinking a pint of Guinness. On her right O’Shaughnessy, in a long white dress, poses decorously holding onto the large promotional umbrella. Grace O’Shaughnessy was a top Irish model in the 1960s based in Dublin. In 1966, when working in the Lebanon as a secretary, she was named as the ‘Ideal Woman of Europe’ in an Italian competition. She worked with the fashion designers Sybil Connolly, Ib Jorgensen and Nellie Mulcahy. She returned to Ireland and set up a modelling agency, as well as working as a fashion TV presenter for RTÉ during the 1970s and 1980s. She has been an ambassador for Women’s Aid, and for Third Age which is dedicated to the well-being of older people. Her companion in this picture is Mollie (sometimes known as Molly) Peters born in 1939. Peters was the stage name of Vivien Humphrey, who grew up in Suffolk, England. She started out as a model for men’s magazines but achieved cult cinema status for appearing as the sensuous Nurse Fearing, opposite Sean Connery's 007, in the first Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). The Fine Gael politician Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, and judge who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-1973. He studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English film producer Greg Smith in conversation with the Irish producer Noel Pearson and Ciara Scott. Given the background décor of Harp Lager-sponsored umbrellas, we might guess that this picture was taken at the festival club. Greg Smith, in a light-coloured jacket on the far right, has his back turned to us as he chats with his companions. While the identity of Pearson and Scott (whose name cannot be verified) (perhaps Ciarín Scott?) is noted with a question mark at the back of the photo, this is probably the Dublin-born film and theatrical producer Noel Pearson who worked on the Academy award-winning My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989) starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Brenda Fricker, and Cyril Cusack. Pearson also produced The Field (Jim Sheridan, 1990) starring Richard Harris, and Dancing at Lughnasa (Pat O’Connor, 1998) with Meryl Streep, Kathy Burke, and Michael Gambon. He originally managed the Dubliners before moving into theatre and becoming the artistic director of the Abbey Theatre where he staged Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa, before adapting it to film in 1998. His production company, Ferndale Productions, also produced The Secret Scripture (Jim Sheridan, 2016), based on the novel by Sebastian Barry, and starring Rooney Mara and Vanessa Redgrave. The film producer Greg Smith was behind a series of X-rated successful movies during the 1970s including Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). His collaborations with the Irish director Norman Cohen also include Spike Milligan’s war memoirs: Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (Norman Cohen, 1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham and Pamela Stephenson, both of whom are in the archive. A bespectacled Smith is standing on the far left, in a light-coloured suit, striped shirt and holding a cigarette and glass in his right hand slightly raised. He is standing next to Hampson, wearing a dark dress and a glass held in her clasped hands. On the far right Harpur, in a tweed jacket, smiles at the camera, his glass also raised. Sheamus Smith had an illustrious career with RTÉ and beyond. He started out as a photojournalist for the now defunct Dublin paper Evening Press before moving to Canada to study film and television. He returned to Ireland in 1961 to join the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) starting as a cameraman before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. The following decade he was appointed Managing Director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). The RTÉ archives remind us that Smith was present at the assassination of Indira Ghandi in October 1984. She was on her way to meet with Sheamus Smith and Rory O'Farrell in her New Delhi garden when she was shot dead by her bodyguards in front of Smith. An interview that Ghandi had made with the Irish broadcaster, Marian Finucane, had been recorded three months earlier and was broadcast that October in a special edition of <a href="https://www.rte.ie/archives/2014/1031/655796-indira-ghandi-born-into-politics/">The Woman's Programme</a> dedicated to Indira Ghandi. The photo identifies the producer Greg Smith, William (Bill) Harpur, former film censor Sheamus Smith, Sheila Hampson, and Hillary O’Herlihy, the wife of Bill O’Herlihy. They are standing together, drink in hand, some smiling for the camera. Sheamus Smith, wearing his distinctive glasses, stands on the left. Smith owned a talent agency in London where he signed on the Irish film-maker Norman Cohen with whom turned a series of risqué best-selling paperback books, by Christopher Wood, into a successful run of ‘confessions’ movies including Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). He went on to produce Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977), starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham who was also at the Cork Film Festival. Hillary O’Herlihy was married to the Cork-born, Glasheen-raised, RTÉ television broadcaster, and Irish Film Board Chairman Bill O’Herlihy. O’Herlihy (1938-2015) was a household name best known for his sports coverage, along with co-presenters Eamon Dunphy and John Giles, on programmes such as Sunday Sport and Sports Stadium and in his time presented 10 FIFA World Cups and 10 Summer Olympic Games. He was a keen cinephile and brought this to his work at the Irish Film Board. O’Herlihy promoted the film industry and in particular, was keen to develop filming in rural Ireland. He also worked for some time as PR for the Cork Film Festival where he emphasised the focus on Irish film. They are probably at the Harp Lager-sponsored festival club and, as with the convivial crowd around them, they drink and chat, cigarette in hand. Helen Shapiro, in a white blouse and embroidered top accessorised with a festival ribbon, was a singing sensation in her day. Born in East London in 1946, she was a British singer whose repertoire included the blues, jazz, gospel and pop music. By the age of 15 she was England’s top recording star with You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness earning her two gold discs. She toured and performed with the Beatles; John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song Misery for her but her then-management refused to let her record it. Shapiro’s film career was brief and she played herself in Play It Cool (Michael Winner,1962) and the lead female role in Its Trad, Dad! directed by Richard Lester (1962) who went on to direct the Beatles’ film Hard Day’s Night (1964). Her stage career includes the West End play Oliver by Lionel Bart and the part of Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Later she toured with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band between 1984 and 2001, as well as touring with her one-woman show Simply Shapiro. Shapiro published her autobiography Walking Back to Happiness in 1993. Ferdy Mayne, on the right, cigar in hand, faces Breen as they chat. A festival ribbon is pinned to the left lapel of his jacket. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including head vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate; Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968); and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams (who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo). Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who also came to Cork around the same time as this photo. (While this photo is marked 1970 it is possibly 1972 based on other items in the archive.) His final film role was as General Karl von Weber in the neo-Nazi political thriller The Killers Within (Paul Leder, 1995) before he returned to England, where he died in 1998 following the onset of Parkinson’s Disease.
