She is shown mid-bite, eating a sausage, smiling up towards the camera. Markus is dressed in a light-coloured sleeveless evening gown decorated with pearl-like beading. Two clips tie her blonde wavy hair back behind her ears. Flowers adorn the table in front of her. Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before accepting her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love (Gustav Ucicky, 1939). Markus would follow this with mostly leading roles in films of all genres from the war through to the post-war period. Her filmography includes Nothing but Trouble with Love (Thomas Engel, 1956), You are Twice Young (Helmut Weiss, 1958), What a Woman Dreams of in Spring (Erik Ode, 1959) and A Woman's Secret (1960). In the early sixties she retired from film and would only appear in television and theatre appearances until her death in 2002 from pneumonia. The photograph identifies the location as the Beamish and Crawford brewery and, based on the wooden panelling in this picture, this might be the tudor-framed reception room of the iconic Counting House on South Main Street in Cork. The brewery was established in 1792 by William Beamish and William Crawford. It was once Ireland’s biggest brewery until overtaken by Guinness in 1833. It closed in March 2009 and its site on South Main Street, is currently being converted into student accommodation and a possible events centre. It has a special place in the cultural memory of Corkonians and former Beamish workers note that the brewery was more than just a workplace but was the very ‘heart of Cork’. (Barry Roche, 'Nazi links and the colourful history of Beamish and Crawford', Irish Times, 27.10.2015; Donal Ó Drisceoil and Diarmuid Ó Drisceoil, Beamish and Crawford: the History of an Irish Brewery, Collins Press, 2015) Eva-Ingeborg Scholz (1928-) was a German film and television actor known for The Girl from the Marsh Croft (Gustav Ucicky, 1958), Emil and the Detectives (Peter Tewksbury, 1964) and the televison show Tatort (1970) for which she won a German Actors Award. The Belgian actor Bettine La Beau (1932-2015) was known for her television, film and radio appearances in the UK. In particular she would be associated with the long-running Benny Hill Show (1969) from 1971 to 1972, The Prisoner (1967), and Call My Bluff. She had an uncredited appearance in the first James Bond film Dr. No (Terence Young, 1962) and small parts in a number of films. Her radio appearances included regular appearances on the BBC World Service programme Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? Her personal life is poignant as she was separated from her parents during World War II and held in two concentration camp during the Holocaust before escaping eventually to England. She would later work as a public speaker speaking about her experience of the Holocaust and authored a book Help Yourself to Happiness in 1999. The third actor in this picture is Heidelinde Weis (1940-). She is an Austrian actor whose film work around the time she came to Cork, in 1969, include The Man Outside (Samuel Gallu, 1967), and Something for Everyone (Harold Prince,1970). Her 1964 film directed by Michael Pfleghar, Die Tote von Beverly Hills (Dead Women From Beverly Hills), was re-released in 2019 as a digitally restored HD version. It has a place in German film history for its invitation to Cannes in 1964, where it won the Palme d’Or and for taking the ‘Bambi’ award for most artistically valuable film in 1965. Scholz, in a dark dress trimmed with a white fur collar and accessorised with dark satin gloves, is holding a cigarette in her right hand. She is shown in profile smiling up at Breen who is seated close to her. Breen holding a cigarette in his right hand which is resting on his right knee, is smiling down at Scholz. Title A name given to the resource Iranian film producer Vasgen Badal and Norma Crosbie Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Vasgen Badal, Norma Crosbie Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the film producter Vasgen Badal and Norma Crosbie greeting each other. Both are in formal wear and Badal looks on, vaguely distracted, while Norma Crosbie, dressed in a white lace dress, leans in to kiss him. The photo is dated 1958 and we note from the 1959 Festival of Cork Programme that Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr that year by Jack Lynch, TD, for the documentary Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958). Badal was an Iranian-born film producer and distributor who moved to Germany as a young man where he learnt about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion.' He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive. Cork had a rich history of dockers working at the Port of Cork, unloading ships berthed at the city's bustling quays; this ended in 2009 following the modernisation of work practices. In this 1950s photo, Markus, wearing a dark coat over a light-coloured dress, is shown laughing and signing her autograph as she turns towards one of the men. On the far left a man can be seen with his head sticking out of a circular porthole window. In the background, we can make out a shipyard crane festooned with crane cables. Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before accepting her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love (Gustav Ucicky, 1939). Markus was awarded the prestigious German culture award - the Gold Film Tape - for her contribution to German film in 1986.
