In 1936 he was responsible for the publicity stills of Leni Riefenstahl's Nazi German propaganda sports film Olympia (1938). After the war, Grimm worked as a stills photographer for film and television until 1984. His studio was on Englerallee in Berlin-Dahlem whose stamp is marked on the reverse of this image. Wearing a light-coloured summer dress, with white kitten-heeled slip-on shoes, she rests her right hand on the chained pillar of the wooden walkway, and poses for the camera, laughing. Behind her we see the imposing limestone façade of the City Hall which is located on Albert Quay in Cork. It was rebuilt in the 1930s following its burning down by the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries, during the 'Burning of Cork' in December 1920. Above Markus we see two unidentified flags on the City Hall fluttering in the wind. Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before accepting her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love directed by the Austrian Gustav Ucicky (1899-1961). Ucicky was probably a child of the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt; throughout his life Ucicky collected the works of his father which were later donated to the Klimt Foundation by his children. Flags of the participating countries adorn the building in a daytime street scene. A group of boys on the left of the picture face the camera, just about to cross the street. Behind them, bicycles lay strewn on the pavement and besides them, two cars are parked at the kerb-side. To the right of the Savoy, we can see the old façade of the Irish Tourist Bureau (Oifig Fáilte). Amongst the cinema posters on display, we can just make out posters advertising the appearance of the German actor Claus Holm (1918-1996) and the German screenwriter and director Bernhard Grzimek (1909-1987) who was the director of the documentary Serengeti Shall Not Die (Grzimek, 1959). It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1960. The Savoy cinema was opened on 12th May 1932 by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Frank J. Wallace with a screening of Peach O'Reno (William A. Seiter, 1931). It could hold 2,242 patrons and boasted an Art Deco façade. In his book on Irish Cinemas, Jim Keenan noted the Savoy had an "ornate 'atmospheric' auditorium, which, like the Savoy in Dublin, was designed to resemble a street scene in Venice... Small lights set into the ceiling of the auditorium were designed to create the illusion that the audience was seated outdoors at night beneath the stars. In the 1930s, a 'cloud projector' beamed images of moving clouds onto the azure-coloured ceiling to further enhance the fantasy." (Jim Keenan. Irish Cinemas: A History in Photographs, pp. 105-106.) On the far left a man can be seen with his head sticking out of a circular porthole window. In the background, we can make out a shipyard crane festooned with crane cables. Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before accepting her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love (Gustav Ucicky, 1939). Markus was awarded the prestigious German culture award - the Gold Film Tape - for her contribution to German film in 1986. Both are in formal wear and Badal looks on, vaguely distracted, while Norma Crosbie, dressed in a white lace dress, leans in to kiss him. The photo is dated 1958 and we note from the 1959 Festival of Cork Programme that Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr that year by Jack Lynch, TD, for the documentary Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958). Badal was an Iranian-born film producer and distributor who moved to Germany as a young man where he learnt about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion.' He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive. Scholz, wearing a velvet cape over a dark dress trimmed with white fur, is shown in profile smiling up at Breen as they chat. Whorls of smoke from Breen's cigarette float past the festival ribbon pinned to his lapel. The photo appears to be signed in dark ink across the lower half of the picture. The photo is undated but we place it c.1959 when Scholz came to Cork for the screening of The Girl from the Marsh Croft (Das Mädchen vom Moohof) (Gustav Ucicky, 1958) starring Claus Holm, who also came to Cork. The film was shown at the festival on 30th September 1959. The 1959 festival programme notes that the film was based on a novel by the Swedish novelist Selma Lagerlöf and deals with love, lust and violence in a small Swedish town. He is shown here, in a check shirt, looking into the lens of the camera. The photo is signed in dark ink. Holm had a prolific filmography from the 1940s to the 1960s with films including Tiger of Bengal (Fritz Lang, 1959), Journey to the Lost City (Fritz Lang, 1960), and The Girl from the Marsh Croft (Gustav Ucicky, 1958) starring Eva Ingeborg Scholz which was shown at the 1959 festival on 30th September.
