Title A name given to the resource Heinz Rühmann and Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Heinz Rühmann, Germany Description An account of the resource These black and white photos are of the German film actor Heinrich (Heinz) Rühmann and the film festival director Dermot Breen.  Heinz Rühmann, standing on the left in these photos, was born in 1902. He was a prolific German film and television actor who acted in over 100 films in his lifetime and is considered a film legend for his contribution to the German film industry. Rühmann managed to court all sectors of German society including the Third Reich, where seemingly he was a favourite of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels, as well as the diarist Ann Frank, who had his picture pinned on the wall of her hiding place, where it still hangs on display today. Rühman's filmography includes Er Kannes Nicht Lassen (Alex von Ambesser, 1962), based on the Father Brown stories by GK Chesterton, and the Hollywood-produced Ship of Fools (Stanley Kramer, 1965) with Vivien Leigh and Lee Marvin. His final film role was as Konrad in Faraway, So Close (1993) directed by Wim Wenders and starring Peter Falk and Nastassja Kinski. Rühmann died in 1994 and was posthumously awarded the 'Goldene Kamera' in 1995 for his contribution to German cinema. Both are in formal wear and Badal looks on, vaguely distracted, while Norma Crosbie, dressed in a white lace dress, leans in to kiss him. The photo is dated 1958 and we note from the 1959 Festival of Cork Programme that Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr that year by Jack Lynch, TD, for the documentary Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958). Badal was an Iranian-born film producer and distributor who moved to Germany as a young man where he learnt about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion.' He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive. The group of seven, dressed in travel attire, pose genially for the camera in front of the Dublin-Cork train at Kent Station on the Lower Glanmire Road in Cork. Paul Rotha (1907-1984), wearing a beret, is holding a pipe in his right hand and is looking directly at the camera. He was a member of the first festival jury in 1956. The photo identifies Gunther Polzelmeir from the Irish Tourist Board in Germany with his wife, festival director Dermot Breen, EF O’Mahony, German actor Kai Fischer, Lord Mayor Peter Barry, and Eugen Vetter from the German Cultural Institute, Dublin. The formally dressed group pose in front of a billboard-sized poster advertising the festival. The Czech-born German actor Kai Fischer was born in 1934. Her filmography includes Too Hot to Handle (Terence Young, 1960) with Jayne Mansfield and Christopher Lee, Bullets Don’t Argue (aka Le pistole non discutono) (Mario Caiano, 1964) and The Goalkeeper’s Fear of the Penalty directed by Wim Wenders (1972), based on the book by Peter Handke. She is accompanied in this photo by Eugen Vetter from the German Cultural Institute in Dublin. In 1965 Vetter founded the Goethe-Institut Choir in Dublin which still performs in Ireland today. Holm had a prolific filmography from the 1940s to the 1960s with films including Tiger of Bengal (Fritz Lang, 1959), Journey to the Lost City (Fritz Lang, 1960), and The Girl from the Marsh Croft (Gustav Ucicky, 1958) starring Eva Ingeborg Scholz which was shown at the 1959 festival on 30th September. The 1959 festival programme notes that the film was based on a novel by the Swedish novelist Selma Lagerlöf and deals with love, lust, and violence in a small Swedish town. They are probably at the Harp Lager-sponsored festival club and, as with the convivial crowd around them, they drink and chat, cigarette in hand. Helen Shapiro, in a white blouse and embroidered top accessorised with a festival ribbon, was a singing sensation in her day. Born in East London in 1946, she was a British singer whose repertoire included the blues, jazz, gospel and pop music. By the age of 15 she was England’s top recording star with You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness earning her two gold discs. She toured and performed with the Beatles; John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song Misery for her but her then-management refused to let her record it. Shapiro’s film career was brief and she played herself in Play It Cool (Michael Winner,1962) and the lead female role in Its Trad, Dad! directed by Richard Lester (1962) who went on to direct the Beatles’ film Hard Day’s Night (1964). Her stage career includes the West End play Oliver by Lionel Bart and the part of Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Later she toured with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band between 1984 and 2001, as well as touring with her one-woman show Simply Shapiro. Shapiro published her autobiography Walking Back to Happiness in 1993. Ferdy Mayne, on the right, cigar in hand, faces Breen as they chat. A festival ribbon is pinned to the left lapel of his jacket. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including head vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate; Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968); and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams (who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo). Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who also came to Cork around the same time as this photo. (While this photo is marked 1970 it is possibly 1972 based on other items in the archive.) His final film role was as General Karl von Weber in the neo-Nazi political thriller The Killers Within (Paul Leder, 1995) before he returned to England, where he died in 1998 following the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. Flags of the participating countries adorn the building in a daytime street scene. A group of boys on the left of the picture face the camera, just about to cross the street. Behind them, bicycles lay strewn on the pavement and besides them, two cars are parked at the kerb-side. To the right of the Savoy, we can see the old façade of the Irish Tourist Bureau (Oifig Fáilte). Amongst the cinema posters on display, we can just make out posters advertising the appearance of the German actor Claus Holm (1918-1996) and the German screenwriter and director Bernhard Grzimek (1909-1987) who was the director of the documentary Serengeti Shall Not Die (Grzimek, 1959). It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1960. The Savoy cinema was opened on 12th May 1932 by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Frank J. Wallace with a screening of Peach O'Reno (William A. Seiter, 1931). It could hold 2,242 patrons and boasted an Art Deco façade. In his book on Irish Cinemas, Jim Keenan noted the Savoy had an "ornate 'atmospheric' auditorium, which, like the Savoy in Dublin, was designed to resemble a street scene in Venice... Small lights set into the ceiling of the auditorium were designed to create the illusion that the audience was seated outdoors at night beneath the stars. All four are dressed in formal wear and smiling. Scholz, in a dark dress trimmed with a white fur collar accessorised with dark satin gloves, is smiling directly at the camera. She was well known in Germany for her film work including The Girl from the Marsh Croft (Gustave Ucicky, 1958), Emil and the Detectives (Peter Tewksbury, 1964) and an appearance in the televison series Tatort (1970) for which she won the German Actors Award. In this photo Dermot Breen is standing on Scholz's left, holding a cigarette, as he looks up at the camera with a broad smile. He stands next to Dinny Gould who is also dressed in a dark suit and bow-tie with a festival badge pinned to its left lapel. She is shown mid-bite, eating a sausage, smiling up towards the camera. Markus is dressed in a light-coloured sleeveless evening gown decorated with pearl-like beading. Two clips tie her blonde wavy hair back behind her ears. Flowers adorn the table in front of her. Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before accepting her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love (Gustav Ucicky, 1939). Markus would follow this with mostly leading roles in films of all genres from the war through to the post-war period. Her filmography includes Nothing but Trouble with Love (Thomas Engel, 1956), You are Twice Young (Helmut Weiss, 1958), What a Woman Dreams of in Spring (Erik Ode, 1959) and A Woman's Secret (1960). In the early sixties she retired from film and would only appear in television and theatre appearances until her death in 2002 from pneumonia.
