The back of the photo identifies only Justin Keating who we see seated on the far right in the front row, looking down laughing. We recognise the former Lord Mayor, Gus Healy, from other images in the archive, and he is seated in the front row on the far left, next to his wife. The audience are all dressed in evening wear, dinner suits for the men and evening dresses for the women. They appear to be waiting for the show to start and are animated chatting to each other or looking around. Ashtrays are placed in intervals in front of the first row guests, most of whom are holding a programme in their hands. Justin Keating (1930-2009) was an Irish Labour party politician who would serve in Dáil Éireann under Liam Cosgrave as Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1973 to 1977. He was a key figure in the creation of the Labour party created by Brendan Corish in the 1960s and ushered in a new era of politics at the time. He also worked as a veterinary surgeon, and lectured at UCD, and was a journalist for RTÉ during its early days. Keating also represented Ireland at the European level serving twice as an MEP. He was the President of the Humanist Association of Ireland (HAI) whose tribute to him on his death notes that he was passionate about Ireland and the role of Europe in the world. The Lord Mayor Seán French, wearing his chain of office, is seated behind Hemmings next to the former Lord Mayor Gus Healy. Some of the other nine delegates are provisionally identified at the back of the photo as the Everyman Theatre founder, and Presentation Brothers College (PBC) teacher, Dan Donovan, Teddy O’Brien, festival director Dermot Breen, and Dorinda Coomber.  David Hemmings was an English actor, director, and producer who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer (which might have been based on David Bailey), in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). His filmography includes The Charge of the Light Brigade (Tony Richardson, 1968), Alfred the Great (Clive Donner, 1969) (which was filmed in Ireland), Juggernaut (Richard Lester, 1974), with Richard Harris and Omar Sharif, and the gangster movie The Squeeze (Michael Apted, 1977) with Stacy Keach and Edward Fox. Distracted by television roles and running his company, Hemdale Corporation, during the 1980s, his credits include Magnum PI, Airwolf, The A-Team, and Quantum Leap. By the 2000s his return to film was well-received and included the role of ‘Cassius’ in Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000), and the role of ‘Lenny’ in the poignant Last Orders (2001), alongside Tom Courtenay and Michael Caine, which was shown at the 46th edition of the Cork Film Festival in 2001. His role in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (2003), with Sean Connery, was one his final roles before his unexpected death in Romania in 2003, age 62, whilst filming the British-Romanian horror film Blessed (a.k.a.Samantha’s Child) (Simon Fellows, 2004) with Heather Graham and James Purefoy. We also note that he had a minor role in the film St Joan (1957), based on the George Bernard play, directed by Austrain-born director Otto Preminger, who came to the film festival with Jean Seberg in the late 1950s. The photo is undated but we can suggest the mid-fifties when Tóstal was inaugurated in Cork. The Cork Film Festival emerged from An Tóstal (1953-1958), which was a pageant, or festival, held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image. While this photo does not identify the ten council members we do recognise some of their faces from the archive. A young Dermot Breen stands in the middle at the back – he went on to found the film festival in 1956 and would run it until his death in 1978. Gus Healy (1904-1987) stands on the far left, hands in pocket. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. A grey-haired Patrick ‘Pa’ McGrath stands at the centre of the group. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who represented Cork in Dáil Éireann between 1946 and 1956. McGrath served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952 to 1956. He took an active part in the Irish War of Independence and was honoured by his comrades by appointing him chairman of the Cork City Old IRA Men’s Association. McGrath died suddenly in 1956 and was honoured by Taoiseach John A Costello in the Dáil, who spoke highly of him in the Dáil Éireann debate that June. The small group of six men pose for the camera smiling, on and around a staircase. While the men are unidentified we recognise Robin O’Sullivan and Gus Healy, second left on the staircase, from the archive. Healy was a Fianna Fáil politician who served Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. His presence in the festival archive goes as far back as the late 1950s when he appears in an image of the original Tóstal Council alongside the then Lord Mayor Patrick McGrath, and festival founder Dermot Breen. On Breen’s unexpected death in 1978 O’Sullivan, standing on the far right in this image in a dark suit and hand in pocket, took over and kept the festival going until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took up the cudgels in the mid-eighties. The Irish comedian and actor Niall Tóibín is noted in the middle of the group. Tóibín was born in Cork in 1929, on the northside of the City. He would go on to have an illustrious stage and film career including parts in Ryan’s Daughter (David Lean, 1970), Far And Away (Ron Howard, 1992), and Veronica Guerin (Joel Schumacher, 2003). The formally dressed pair, hands clasped in a handshake, seem pleased to meet each other. We can make out the festival committee member Dick Beamish entering the shot on the left. Gus Healy is a familiar presence in the archive and worked on the festival committee since its inception in 1956. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who would serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 an 1975 to 1976. Title A name given to the resource Gus Healy, Frank Sanquest, and Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Gus Healy, Frank Sanquest, Dermot Breen Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the festival director Dermot Breen with the artist and journalist Frank Sanquest and the politician, and former Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy. Gus Healy, seated on the far left, was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. He is seated next to the artist Frank Sanquest, in half-rimmed spectacles and wearing his trade-mark dickie bow. Sanquest (1912-2008) was a Cork-born artist who worked for many years as resident set-designer for the Cork Opera House before it burnt down in 1954. He was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James N. Healy; they often toured with John B Keane plays, starring the Cork actor Michael Twomey who also came to the Cork Film Festival. From 1940 to 1987 Sanquest worked as the Arts Editor for the Cork Examiner and would attend festival press conferences for the paper. The photo is taken from the top of the steps in the marble foyer of the Savoy and looks down at the crowd milling below. The photo recognises the Lord Mayor in conversation with the festival director Dermot Breen, cigarette in hand. Behind the Mayor we recognise the low-sized profile of former Lord Mayor Gus Healy, Dick Burke and Sean Cunningham. Behind them a crowd congregate at the doors of the cinema and we can sense the excitement of the occasion.
