Suzanna Leigh, standing on the right in a light-coloured dress, also starred in Hammer horror films during the early seventies including The Deadly Bees (Freddie Francis, 1967) and Son of Dracula (Freddie Francis, 1974) starring Ringo Starr, earning her a cult following amongst horror fans. Her personal life was of great interest to the press of the day and her boyfriends included the actors Richard Harris, Steve McQueen, and Michael Caine. Leigh’s Hollywood career was cut short due to a union row about foreign actors in Hollywood and she would return to England. In 2000 she published her memoirs, Paradise, Suzanna Style, where she describes her encounters with various film stars and directors including Roman Polanski, Peter Finch and Otto Preminger - who also came to the Cork festival with his film St Joan (1957). The photo is a stock image from the 1971 British horror film I, Monster (Stephen Weeks) which was an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. They are probably sitting under the Harp Lager-sponsored umbrella of the festival club and are chatting, drinking, and smoking as are the animated guests who sit at tables around them. Jon Finch, at the right of the photo in a leather jacket pulling on a cigarette, was an English film and stage actor born in 1942. He was a handsome in demand actor who achieved some notoriety for turning down plum roles when offered them due to a self-proclaimed lack of ambition, such as the chance to replace Sean Connery and play James Bond in Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton, 1973) (the part went to Roger Moore instead). In the early 1970s Finch played supporting roles in Hammer Horror productions The Horror of Frankenstein (Jimmy Sangster, 1970) and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) with Dawn Addams, a regular visitor to the Cork Film Festival in its earlier days, with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. But it was for his Shakespearean roles Finch would become well known. Most famously he played Macbeth in Macbeth (aka The Tragedy of Macbeth) (Roman Polanski, 1971) alongside his companion in this picture, Francesca Annis, as Lady Macbeth. Finch also starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy (1972) as well the BBC television productions Richard II (1978), Henry IV, parts one and two (1979), and as Don Pedro in the BBC’s Much Ado About Nothing (1984). His final film role was in the historical drama Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott, 2005) alongside Orlando Bloom and Eva Green. Finch died in 2012, age 71. Francesca Annis, chatting to her companion in this picture, is also an English film and stage actor with a prolific film career. At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) with Jon Finch, directed by Roman Polanski, whose wife Sharon Tate had recently been murdered in Hollywood by followers of Charles Manson. The film was financed by the Playboy magazine editor Hugh Hefner as mainstream studios refused to finance it given Polanski’s mental state and yet, despite its critical mauling at the time, the film has gone on to garner plaudits for its somewhat accurate depiction of a bleak violent world. The convivial group are shown in a huddle in conversation; Gilliam and his companions are sitting on a table resting up against the wall while Sheamus Smith, arms folded, stands and listens to them. Smith was a producer and director at RTÉ around the time of this photo (1970s) before being appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975. He was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board and was later appointed Irish film censor, going on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State from 1986 to 2002. Smith published his memoir Off Screen (Gill & MacMillan) in 2007. We know Terry Gilliam as part of the Monty Python troupe and the long-running BBC sketch comedy Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1969-1974), which relied heavily on his surreal animation skills. Around the time of this photo in the 1970s, Gilliam had co-directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail (with Terry Jones, 1975) and soon after directed Jabberwocky (1977), based on Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, and starring Michael Palin. He has been nominated a number of times for an Academy Award for Brazil (1985), The Fisher King (1991), 12 Monkeys (1995), and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). Linda Hayden, on the far left of the photo in a knitted halter-neck dress, and holding a cigarette, came to Cork on a number of occasions and often features in the festival archive photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham, with whom she starred in a series of Confessions movies based on the series of risqué best-selling paperback books by Christopher Wood. The three are standing in front of hoarding advertising the Harp Lager-sponsored festival. Annis, wearing a cheese-cloth style tunic, is turned to O’Connell chatting while Mayne smiles directly at the camera. O’Donnell, in dark-rimmed glasses, might be the legendary Cork publican Brian O’Donnell of the tiny Hi-B bar on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork. Infamously he would throw you out of his bar, located at the top of a somewhat dilapidated staircase, if you took a call on your phone or caused him consternation in any way. O’Donnell died in 2019 attracting warm tributes from Cork and beyond. Francesca Annis is an English film and stage actor born in 1945 who began acting when she was a teenager. She has a prolific film career and films include Cleopatra (Joseph Mankiewicz,1962) when she was age 16, with Elizabeth Taylor; Krull (Peter Yates, 1983), Dune (David Lynch, 1984) and the directorial debut by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon (1986). At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) directed by the Polish-French film director Roman Polanski, whose wife, Sharon Tate, had been murdered recently in Hollywood by the Charles Manson family.  Annis is shown in this picture with Ferdy Mayne, who also worked with Polanski in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate whom Polanski married the following year. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968), and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams, who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who also came to the Cork festival. The fair-haired actor Shane Briant, in a suede jacket accessorised with a cravat, is standing on the left listening to the conversation. Wetherell, at the centre, in a dark-patterned dress, is turned to her companion and smiling. Both Wetherell and Briant worked together in the British horror film Demons of the Mind directed by Peter Sykes which was released in 1972 – the year that this photo was taken at the festival. Born in 1943, Virginia Wetherell was an English actor best known for her roles in Hammer horror films such as Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and aforementioned Demons of the Mind. She also appeared, as the naked actor tempting Malcolm McDowell as Alex, in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange in 1971. Wetherell had a large body of television work throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, including the part of Dyoni in the first Dalek story series of Doctor Who. In 1971 Wetherell opened a vintage clothes shop in London’s Notting Hill, known as Virginia, shutting down in 2015 when Wetherell (now Bates) turned 72.  Wetherell's companion in this picture is the actor and novelist, London-born Shane Briant. Briant studied at Trinity College Dublin before becoming an actor best known for his roles in Hammer Film Productions. He has many television credits, both in England and Australia where he settled, as well as film credits including the British Cold War thriller The Mackintosh Man (John Huston, 1973) with Paul Newman and James Mason (who can also be found in this archive), and as Clifford Chatterley in Lady Chatterley's Lover (Just Jaeckin, 1981). Briant's first short film, A Message from Fallujah (Richard Gibson, Shane Briant, 2005), won a 'Best of the Fest' award at the 2005 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival and was considered for an Academy Award that year. On the far left we recognise the English actor Peter Cushing (1913-1994) who was best known for his roles as Baron Frankenstein and Doctor Van Helsing in the Hammer Productions horror films. Cushing also appeared as Tarkin, in Star Wars (1977) written and directed by George Lucas. Around the time of this picture, dated 1972, Cushing had appeared in a number of horror films including Fear in the Night (Jimmy Sangster, 1972) starring Joan Collins and Judy Geeson who also came to the Cork festival.
