It shows the English actor Mollie Peters, sitting with the festival director Dermot Breen. They are seated side-by-side at a dinner table and Peters, wearing an emerald green dress, is shown in profile looking towards Breen. Mollie (sometimes spelled 'Molly') Peters was the stage name of Vivien Mollie Rudderham, an English actor best known for her role as Nurse Patricia Fearing, opposite Sean Connery's 007 in Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). She was famously the first Bond girl to take off her clothes on-screen, earning the franchise its first X-rating. Several scenes were cut at the request of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) for their risqué nature. Despite the success of Thunderball, Peters went on to have a short-lived film career, mainly due to contractual disagreements with her agent that forestalled her career. Dressed in white trousers and a checkered shirt, Peters is leaning back and holding a local guide book of Cork while smiling at the camera; her legs dangle over the chrome trim of the car’s radiator grill, next to the iconic Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star. Two small Irish flags adorn the car either side of the grill which might suggest that this was the Lord Mayor’s car. Behind Peters in the distance we can see the imposing three spires of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral. Designed by William Burges, and built 1827-81 from Cork limestone, the cathedral is located on the south side of the River Lee in Cork City. Burges designed it to be compact in a French Gothic style, with a narrow interior that soars to a great height. Its three spires stand out for their intricate architectural details including gargoyles and such embellishments throughout. Approximately 844 sculptures adorn the interior and exterior including 32 gargoyles and the twelve Apostles of The Last Judgement at the Tympanum over the entrance door. In this photo we cannot really make out the copper gilt-edged Resurrection Angle, also known fondly as the 'Goldie Angel' by locals, which adorns the main spire in place of a cross - a gift from the Victorian architect to the city. Byrne is standing next to Peters who is sitting on a beer key, wearing a white fur jacket over a dark dress, and drinking a pint of Guinness. On her right O’Shaughnessy, in a long white dress, poses decorously holding onto the large promotional umbrella. Grace O’Shaughnessy was a top Irish model in the 1960s based in Dublin. In 1966, when working in the Lebanon as a secretary, she was named as the ‘Ideal Woman of Europe’ in an Italian competition. She worked with the fashion designers Sybil Connolly, Ib Jorgensen and Nellie Mulcahy. She returned to Ireland and set up a modelling agency, as well as working as a fashion TV presenter for RTÉ during the 1970s and 1980s. She has been an ambassador for Women’s Aid, and for Third Age which is dedicated to the well-being of older people. Her companion in this picture is Mollie (sometimes known as Molly) Peters born in 1939. Peters was the stage name of Vivien Humphrey, who grew up in Suffolk, England. The panel is part of a 1970 symposium for the Cork Film Festival. The five panellists are sitting in a semi-circle on the stage in front of long-armed microphones, and include an unidentified priest on the far right sitting next to Long. Jugs of water and ashtrays are placed on the wooden tables in front of them and they all appear to be listening attentively to a speaker off-camera. Bunny Carr is sitting on the far left, hands folded at his chin, looking to his left across the stage. Born in Dublin, Bernard ‘Bunny’ Carr (1927-2018) was a popular RTÉ television presenter during the 1960s and 1970s. He also founded Carr Communications which is said to have trained six of Ireland’s Taoisigh (prime ministers). However it is as a television host of popular television shows that he is fondly remembered including, Teen Talk, The Politicians, Going Strong, and most famously the quizmaster of Quicksilver, where he was accompanied by the musical cues of organist Norman Metcalfe, which made its debut in 1965. (‘Bunny the man who stopped the lights – then showed politicians how to deal with life in spotlight’, Irish Times, 21.09.2018.)  Wolf Mankowitz (1924-1998), sitting on the right in this picture wearing a white shirt, with a cigarette in hand, was an award-winning English screenwriter and author known for his novels, plays and screenplays. He was of Jewish descent, born in the East End of London. However, following altercations with the English revenue, he moved to Ireland to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists and settled in Cork in 1971. Mankowitz was a successful screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote screenplays for his own works and adapted others including A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1953) and The Millionairess (Anthony Asquith, 1960) starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. He was one of the screenwriters on the first James Bond film Dr No (Terence Young, 1962) but asked for his name to be removed from the credits as he thought it poor; he also collaborated on the Bond movie Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 1976). In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson, starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson and Harry Towb (who also appears in this archive). Set in Cork in 1921, during the War of Independence, it is about the friendship between an IRA man escaping pursuit from the Black and Tans, and an elderly man at a synagogue. He wrote the screenplay having being told the story about an IRA man hiding in a small synagogue in Dublin’s Lennox Street and it was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Interestingly the Guardian newspaper reported that the British M15 kept a security file on Mankowitz for more than a decade suspecting that he was a possible communist agent following his marriage to Ann Seligmann, in 1944, as she was a communist party member. The investigation was dropped when the M15 informant insisted that Mankowitz’s leftwing sympathies had disappeared noting that “He comes to the college every morning with a copy of the Times.” (Alan Travis, The Guardian, 26.08.2010.) The Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse (1928-2009) stands on the right which dates this photo to his mayoralty 1974-1975. The reception includes the actor Patrick Wayne on the left and the Monty Python actor Carol Cleveland. Cleveland, standing next to Wayne in this picture, was the only woman associated with the Monty Python show and would appear in thirty of the forty-five Monty Python episodes as well as the Monty Python films Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones 1975), Monty Python's Life of Brian (Terry Jones, 1979) and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (Terry Jones, 1983). In 2014 she published Pom Poms Up! From Puberty to the Pythons and Beyond (Dynasty Press Ltd.) which was well received by the critics. Jane Seymour, in a light-coloured polo neck jumper, is turned to the camera smiling as she signs the visitors' book. Born in 1951, Seymour has an extensive stage and screen career. She is probably best known for the James Bond film Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton, 1973), Somewhere in Time (Jeannot Szwarc, 1980) with Christopher Plummer and Christopher Reeve, and the miniseries East Of Eden (1981) based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, and which won her a Golden Globe award. She has numerous television credits including The Onedin Line (1972) with Peter Gilmore (who also came to the Cork Film Festival), Onassis: The Richest Man in the World (1988), for which she won an Emmy Award, and the long-running show Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993-1998). Seymour also worked alongside Patrick Wayne on the fantasy film Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (Sam Wanamaker, 1977) which was made in 1975 but not released until 1977 because of the time involved making the stop motion animation sequences. A bearded Patrick Wayne, stands on the left of this photo. Born in 1939, he is the son of the actor John Wayne (1907-1979) famous for his Western films. Patrick Wayne would act in eleven films alongside his father including the John Ford classics: The Quiet Man (1952), Mister Roberts (1955), The Long Gray Line (1955), and The Searchers (1956). Patrick Wayne was working on the fantasy film Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (Sam Wanamaker, 1977) with Jane Seymour when he was asked to come to Cork to represent his father’s new movie Brannigan (Douglas Hickox, 1975) starring John Wayne, Richard Attenborough and Judy Geeson – all of whom came to the Cork Film Festival. Interestingly the screenplay of Brannigan was by Christopher Trumbo, son of the screenwriter Dalton Trumbo – one of the ‘Hollywood Ten’ who had been blacklisted in Hollywood during the 1940s and 1950s. The Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse (1928-2009) stands on the right which dates this photo to his mayoralty 1974-1975. The reception includes the actor Patrick Wayne on the left and, perched on the arm of the chair, the Monty Python actor Carol Cleveland. The photo also identifies the TV director and author Christopher Fitz-Simon and Pat Roche from the Cork-Kerry Tourism Board. Fitz-Simon was a drama director with RTÉ who has held posts as artistic director of the Lyric, Abbey, and Peacock Theatres. In 2007 he published his well-received memoir of Ireland in the 1940s Eleven Houses (Penguin, Ireland). He stands behind Jane Seymour in this picture, looking down, as she looks up and smiles at the camera. Born in 1951, Seymour has an extensive stage and screen career. She is probably best known for roles in the James Bond film Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton, 1973), Somewhere in Time (Jeannot Szwarc, 1980) with Christopher Plummer and Christopher Reeve, and the miniseries East Of Eden (1981) winning her a Golden Globe. She has numerous television credits including The Onedin Line (1972) with Peter Gilmore (who also came to the Cork Film Festival), Onassis: The Richest Man in the World (1988), for which she won an Emmy Award, and the long-running show Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993-1998). Seymour also worked alongside Patrick Wayne on the fantasy film Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (Sam Wanamaker, 1977). A bearded Patrick Wayne, stands on the left of this photo. Born in 1939, he is the son of the actor John Wayne (1907-1979) and would act in eleven films alongside his father including the John Ford classics: The Quiet Man (1952), Mister Roberts (1955), The Long Gray Line (1955), and The Searchers (1956). Title A name given to the resource Wolf Mankowitz at the Savoy Cinema, Cork Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Wolf Mankowitz, Savoy Cinema, James Bond Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English screenwriter Wolf Mankowtiz and companions at the Savoy Cinema in Cork. The imposing figure of Mankowitz, dressed in all black, stands on the right of the photo, slightly turned to his left whilst in conversation with another man. To the left of the photo are two unidentified companions, a younger man with curly dark hair, wearing a velvet jacket accessorised with a scarf at his neck, and in front of him we can just make out the features of a young lady with similar dark curly hair, looking down with a smile on her lips. Mankowitz (1924-1998) was an award-winning English screenwriter and author known for his novels, plays, and screenplays. Mankowitz was of Jewish descent, born in the East End of London. However, following altercations with the English revenue, he moved to Ireland to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists and settled in Cork in 1971. He was a successful screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote screenplays for his own works and adapted others including A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1953) and The Millionairess (Anthony Asquith, 1960) starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. He was one of the screenwriters on the first James Bond film Dr No (Terence Young, 1962) but asked for his name to be removed from the credits as he thought it poor; he also collaborated on the Bond movie Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 1976). In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson, and Harry Towb (who can also be found in this archive). The film is set in Cork in 1921 during the War of Independence and is about the friendship between an IRA man, escaping pursuit from the Black and Tans, and an elderly man at a synagogue. Mankowitz wrote the screenplay having being told the story about an IRA man hiding in a small synagogue in Dublin’s Lennox Street (TCD Irish Film and TV Research Online: tcd.ie/irishfilm).  It was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972 and, despite the photo being marked 1960s, might suggest that the photo was taken around then. Interestingly the Guardian reported that the British M15 kept a security file on Mankowitz for more than a decade suspecting that he was a possible communist agent following his marriage to Ann Seligmann, in 1944, as she was a communist party member. The investigation was dropped when the M15 informant insisted that Mankowitz’s leftwing sympathies had disappeared noting that “He comes to the college every morning with a copy of the Times.” (Alan Travis, The Guardian, 26.08.2010.) The formally dressed group, some with a glass in their hand, are chatting and oblivious to the camera while Tsai Chin, wearing an elaborately beaded jacket accessorised with an ornate necklace, faces the camera smiling. This is a unique film festival image, dated 1970s, of Tsai Chin. Chin is a Chinese actor born in 1933 and working to this day (2020). The daughter of Zhou Xinfang, a renowned master of the Peking Opera, she was the first Chinese student to study in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), the first Chinese actor to star in a West End show, and shored up the exotic quotient in movies such as Bond’s You Only Live Twice (Lewis Gilbert, 1967) and the Fu Manchu film franchise. In the 1960s she shot to fame when starring as 'Suzie,' the Hong Kong prostitute, in the 1959 West End play The World of Suzie Wong based on the book by Richard Mason; she would follow this with extensive work on stage, television, and screen including The Face of Fu Manchu (Don Sharp, 1965), The Virgin Soldiers (Leslie Thomas, 1966), The Joy Luck Club (Wayne Wang, 1993), Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 2006) and most recently the voice of ‘Nai Nai’ in the computer-animated adventure Abominable (Jill Culton, 2019). Wishing to break away from being typecast as an exotic ingénue she later took roles that challenged the stereotypes of Asian women on the screen. In 1988 Tsai Chin published her autobiography, Daughter of Shanghai, which recalls her early, and sometimes tragic, life including her early life in Shanghai, and her parents’ brutal deaths during the cultural revolution. It was a worldwide success and inspired the film of the same name, starring Tsai Chin, and directed by Michelle Chen Miao in 2019.
