A young Legendre, in a herringbone tweed jacket, is shown in profile listening to a Marcus on the right. Both are wearing festival pins on their jackets and if we zoom into those pins we can see that the pin on Legendre’s jacket is marked ‘delegate’ and the pin on Marcus’ jacket is marked ‘Jury’. The room behind them is crowded and, with Marcus holding a drink in his hand, we might guess that this is a reception held for the delegates of the film festival. There is no information to corroborate the identity of Legendre but we appreciate the presence of local man turned film director, Louis Marcus, at the festival. Marcus was born in Cork City to an Irish Jewish family. He attended University College Cork before beginning his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1961). Marcus would continue to work on Gael-Linn documentaries until 1973. His first documentary <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958) on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prize-winners at the Cork Film Festival for some years. We recognise the filmmaker John Boorman standing at the far left in a cheque jacket. He stands alongside the Irish director Norman Cohen, in a dark jacket and short beard. Cohen was a familiar presence at the festival in the seventies, along with Lynda Bellingham and Linda Hayden who starred in his risqué comedies including Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Cohen, 1977) and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (Cohen, 1977). The 1974 film festival programme notes that Boorman and Cohen were both members of the International Jury for the Feature Films Competition that year which helps us date this photo. Sheamus Smith, wearing his distinctive glasses, stands on the far right of the photo. Smith was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). He published his memoir Off Screen (Gill and MacMillan) in 2007. The small group of five sit on a leather-covered high-backed bench, and smile for the camera. While some faces are familiar to us from the archive they remain unidentified and the only jury member identified in the photo is the Irish writer, broadcaster and cineaste Ciaran Carty. Carty was deputy editor of The Sunday Independent (1961-65) before becoming arts editor and chief critic for The Sunday Tribune (1985-2011). His books include a two-volume biography of the artist Robert Ballagh (Magill, 1986), Confessions of a Sewer Rat: A Personal History of Censorship and the Irish Cinema (New Island Books, 1995) and Writer to Writer – the Republic of Elsewhere (Lilliput Press, 2019), with interviews by Carty of great writers including Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, and Seamus Heaney. Carty was the director and curator of the annual Hennessy Literary Awards for new Irish writing and maintained and edited the featured writing in national papers over the years including the Sunday Tribune, Irish Independent, and finally The Irish Times. However, following lack of sponsorship after Hennessy withdrew in 2018, New Irish Writing ceased operation in April 2020. The photo only identifies the archivist Liam O’Leary sitting second left, wearing a patterned dickie bow. Liam O’Leary (1910-1992), from Youghal, County Cork, was a film maker, film historian and archivist. He established the Liam O’Leary Archive to rescue Irish film-related objects, stories and ephemera. The collection includes his research into Irish, European and international cinema and film as well as his hand-written notes and correspondence on local events including the Cork International Film Festival. The archive can be viewed in Special Collections of the National Library of Ireland. The three of them are chatting and laughing while standing facing each other. Jane Asher, on the left of the photo, is wearing a light-coloured polo-neck jumper and is looking over to a smiling Sinéad Cusack, who is wearing an embroidered high-neck shirt under a checkered jacket. Farina, in the middle of the group, with a festival ribbon pinned to the lapel of his jacket, leans in as he chats. The back of the photo notes that Corrado Farina was at the festival as a member of the Jury that year in a photo marked 1972. He directed two horror feature films during the 1970s: They Have Changed Their Face (1971) and Baba Yaga (1973). The American actor Carroll Baker, who was in Cork in the same year as Farina, played the part of ‘Baba Yaga’ – a middle-aged seductress who ultimately controls the main character Valentina, played by Isabelle De Funès, through a doll that she gives her. Baba Yaga was based on the graphic stories written by the Italian Guido Crepax who is famous for his ‘Valentina’ series of books. Crepax is also a keen wargamer and is the author of the first wargames to be published in Italy. Jane Asher, on the left of the photo, is an English actor, writer and businesswoman with a particular interest in baking. She has worked in film, theatre, radio and television since she was a young child. Her filmography includes the under-rated Deep End (Jerzy Skolimowksi, 1970) (with music by Cat Stevens), Alfie (Lewis Gilbert, 1966) with Michael Caine, and the British sitcom The Old Guys. At the time of this picture, marked 1972, Asher starred in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (Waris Huessein, 1972) where she played the part of Jane Seymour. Asher is a shareholder in the magazine Private Eye and has written many books including best-selling novels and lifestyle books. Born in Dublin she is the daughter of the actor Maureen Cusack and the actor Cyril Cusack. The group of seven, dressed in travel attire, pose genially for the camera in front of the Dublin-Cork train at Kent Station on the Lower Glanmire Road in Cork. Paul Rotha (1907-1984), wearing a beret, is holding a pipe in his right hand and is looking directly at the camera. He was a member of the first festival jury in 1956. In 1961, his film Das Leben Von Adolf Hitler (The Life of Adolf Hitler) was shown at the Savoy during that year's film festival. Title A name given to the resource Danish film critic Bjørn Rasmussen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Bjørn Rasmussen, Denmark Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the pioneering film critic Bjørn Rasmussen. In this photo, marked 1958, Rasmussen is seated at a desk speaking into a microphone. He rests his hands, folded over each other, on the crook of a wooden walking stick and is caught in mid-conversation glancing upwards. He is dressed in a light-coloured suit with a white shirt, with the collar of the shirt and tie slightly askew. The 1958 festival programme includes a profile of Rasmussen, along with the president of the jury, John Grierson, producer Joy Batchelor and MGM manager Douglas King. Born in 1918, Rasmussen was known for a long-running television series, Filmorientering, and Filmkronik, a film review programme. He taught film studies at the University of Copenhagen and was the head of the International Jury for the 21st Berlin Film Festival in 1971. That year the Golden Bear for best film was awarded to The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini) directed by Vittorio De Sica who was a frequent visitor to the Cork festival in its early years.  Rasmussen died the following year in 1972, age 54.
