Marked 1962 the photo identifies four of the revellers to be the actor Ronnie Shiner, the local businessman Donal Crosbie, Norma Crosbie and Edmond Purdom, an English actor, voice artist, and director. The room is packed with a well-dressed crowd in the midst of a sing-song and includes, at the back of the room by the wooden door, three uniformed Gardaí. At the centre of the photo, we can make out the distinctive profile of the British actor Ronald Shiner with his arms raised. Known as ‘Ronnie’, Shiner (1903-1966) was a British stand-up comedian and comedy actor who worked on stage, television and film. A career highlight included the stage version of Worm’s Eye View (1945 to 1947) followed by a film version in 1952 with Diana Dors. In 1962, around the time this photo was taken, he had made a TV version of Worm’s Eye View for the BBC. Shiner was the subject of This is Your Life in 1958 when he was surprised by Eamon Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre. Based on photographs in Roy Hammond's own book, Media Memories of Cork (1994), we have reason to that one of the obscured figures is that of Mexican actress Linda Christian. Purdom and Christian were married to each other for the short period of 1962-1963 and so they would have been a couple at the time of this visit to Cork. The party is taking place in the MacCurtain Street Garda Station which was located at 58 MacCurtain Street. It was originally a house built c.1830 before its use as a Garda station and constabulary barracks. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage describes it as a terraced three-bay four-storey former house, over basement, as a pair with the adjoining former house to the west. A flight of limestone steps, framed by cast-iron railings, lead to a round-headed door opening. The station was closed in 2013, as part of a programme of Garda station closures around Ireland. The thirteen guests, all of whom are smiling for the camera, sit on either side of a long table with the Fianna Fáil politician, Gus Healy, seated at its head. The wooden table is adorned with candlesticks and the guests are having soup and a roll served on patterned tableware.  The identified guest, Barbara Vance, was the wife of Douglas Vance, the manager of the Metropole Hotel located on MacCurtain Street, Cork. The Metropole was designed by the architect Arthur Hill and was opened in 1897. The hotel was originally run by Jimmy Musgrave, after whom Musgrave (now Irish Independent) Park was named for his dedication to Rugby. Until the mid-1950s it was known as Ireland's finest 'dry hotel' because the owners, the Musgraves, believed alcohol should not be served; the ban was lifted in 1956 at the behest of the manager Douglas Vance - just in time for the first Cork film festival. The hotel occupied the upper floors of the building with the ground floor and basement let out for retail. Two shops on either side of the entrance included the famous Turkish Delight sweet shop Hadji Bey run by Harutan Batmazian who came to Cork from Armenia in 1903. Lawson's Outfitters occupied the other unit and the name can still be seen on the hotel's façade today. Edward VII supposedly took high tea on the roof of the hotel when he visited Cork in 1903 for the Great Exhibition of Cork. Douglas Vance took over the running of Metropole Hotel in 1944 and made headlines around the world when he refused a request from the English actor Dawn Addams for a bath to be filled with milk, noting that the Cork people would be appalled since they found it hard to make ends meet at the time. He is wearing a dark suit and his trademark trilby hat walking along the street, accompanied by a uniformed officer in a tailored tunic and Sam Browne belt. Uniformed soldiers, in regulation dark berets, line up before him, standing at attention, with their arms fixed to their sides and their thumbs parallel to their trousers. In the distance, just before MacCurtain street meets St Patrick's Hill, we see the Army band. Patrick Hillery (1923-2008) was a Fianna Fáil politician who served as the sixth President of Ireland from 1976 to 1990 following some time as Ireland's first European commissioner from 1973 to 1976. In this picture Hillery is seen walking past the distinctive façade of the Cork Baptist Church which was established in King Street (now MacCurtain Street) in 1892. Its red-brick façade, with its unusual tower and carving over the door entrance, is a distinctive landmark on MacCurtain Street. On its right, and just out of shot, we note the unique red-break façade of Victoria Buildings which were designed by the Cork-born architect Arthur Hill (1846-1921).
