Redgrave, wearing a light-coloured cheesecloth blouse with glass beads and a broad-brimmed hat, is smiling at Elford as she passes over the award. Behind them we can make out the advertising billboard for the Cork Film International Festival. The award, an engraved bronze-style relief with a Celtic image, is inscribed Film Society Award, Film International 1972. Elford received it for Pass of Arms which he wrote, produced and directed. It featured the English folk singer Sandy Denny (1947-1978) on the soundtrack which was written by Don Fraser. Denny, who was the lead singer of the British folk band Fairport Convention, died a few years later in 1978. Pass of Arms was Peter Elford’s only film as a director. He is credited as a production and location manager for a number of television programmes since then, especially for work during the 1980s and 1990s, including The Long Good Friday (John Mackenzie, 1981), The Lair of the White Worm (Ken Russell, 1988), and King Ralph (David Ward, 1991). Redgrave was an English actor born in 1943. She has an extensive stage, television, and film career and has been nominated for two Golden Globe awards as well as being a two-time Oscar nominee. Her films include the Oscar-nominated Georgy Girl (Silvio Narizzano, 1966), Shine (Scott Hicks, 1996) with Geoffrey Rush, and Bill Condon’s God and Monsters (1998) with Ian McKellan and Brendan Fraser. Around the time of this photo she had just completed the Woody Allen comedy film Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) (1972) starring Woody Allen, Burt Reynolds, Gene Wilder and John Carradine.
