The photographs, by the photographer Donal Sheehan, include the festival director Dermot Breen holding forth alongside the journalist and artist Frank Sanquest, Dick Beamish, and journalist Larry Lyons. They are sitting around a table which is scattered with the detritus of the day including papers, ashtrays, and a black Ericsson Dialog-style telephone. Frank Sanquest, sitting on the far left of the photo, wearing a striped shirt with a dickie-bow, was a Cork-born artist who specialised in portraiture and landscapes. He studied art at the Cork Crawford School of Art and London’s Central School of Art and the College of Printing before returning to Cork. He was a past president of the Munster Fine Art Society and for many years was resident set designer for the Cork Opera House. He was an excellent scene painter and his work at the Cork Opera House included the set for Oklahoma in the 1950s when Dan Donovan was directing for the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James Healy which toured with John B Keane plays often with the Cork actor Michael Twomey. They had great success with Sive in 1959. From 1940 to 1987 Sanquest also worked as the Arts Editor for The Cork Examiner, in whose capacity he might have been attending the Film Festival press briefings. He died in 2008, age 95. The journalist Larry Lyons, sitting behind Dick Beamish by the wall, also worked for The Cork Examiner in the 1970s; his journalism covered the fraught days of the troubles in the early 1970s as well as film reviews. Smith and O’Herlihy are turned towards Disney listening to him as he speaks. Behind them we notice part of a sign advertising the Cork International Film Festival. Sheamus Smith, on the left in a leather jacket, started his career as a photojournalist for the now defunct Dublin paper Evening Press before moving to Canada to study film and television. He returned to Ireland in 1961 to join the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) starting as a cameraman before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. Later he was appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). Sitting in the middle is the Cork-born RTÉ television broadcaster and Irish Film Board Chairman Bill O’Herlihy (1938-2015). He grew up in Glasheen in Cork and attended Glasheen Boys' national school, and St Finbarr’s College in Farranferris, leaving school at fifteen to join the Cork Examiner before working for RTÉ. He would become a household name best known for his sports coverage, along with co-presenters Eamon Dunphy and John Giles, on programmes such as Sunday Sport and Sports Stadium and in his time presented 10 FIFA World Cups and 10 Summer Olympic Games. O’Herlihy was a keen cinephile and brought this to his work at the film board. O’Herlihy promoted the film industry and in particular was keen to develop filming in rural Ireland; he worked for some time as PR for the Cork Film Festival where he emphasised the focus on Irish film. (Niamh Horan, Irish Independent, 28.04.2013.) Roy Disney, on the far right, cigar in hand, was the nephew of the late Walt Disney and a senior executive of the Walt Disney Company. Born in 1930 in California, he worked all his life for Walt Disney Productions and made a significant impact on its direction, striving to keep it from being split up by fellow Disney executives. Disney became an adopted native of Cork when he purchased Coolmain Castle near Killbrittan, Cork in the early 1990s and, being a keen sailor, was a regular visitor to Cork race week before his death in 2009. Rhone, resting his chin on his right hand, is seated at the top of the table in a checkered shirt, his lean physique is turned towards his (unidentified) companions at the table who are smiling while looking down at the table. The table is littered with papers, cigarettes, ashtrays, and a pair of sunglasses. Behind them, we note the Press Office poster tacked to the wall, next to a man with a cigarette in his mouth who catches the flash of the camera with a smile. Trevor Rhone was in Cork for his successful film The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972) which he co-wrote with Perry Henzell. (The back of the photo notes that this group includes Perry Henzell, but he isn’t in this picture.) It was the first Jamaican-produced feature film and introduced reggae music to an international audience, becoming a cult hit in the process. Rhone’s later filmography includes Milk and Honey (Glen Salzman, Rebecca Yates, 1988) and the Cannes Film Festival ‘favourite’ award-winning One Love (Trevor Rhone, 2003), starring Ky-Mani Marley – the son of Bob Marley. In addition to his film work, Rhone lectured in Jamaica and various American universities including Harvard; his contribution to Caribbean cinema is profound. Rhone died from a heart attack at the age of 69 in 2009 and is buried in Jamaica. Nameplates and small flags representing various countries decorate the table around which attendees are seated. There are no identifying marks at the back but we recognise the festival director Dermot Breen seated on the Lord Mayor’s left. The Lord Mayor is standing in front of the festival logo as he makes a speech to the assembled guests. The photo frame was marked 1970 which suggests that this is the Fine Gael politician Peter Barry who served as Lord Mayor of Cork that year. An audience is gathered around at the back of the room listening to the proceedings and some are taking notes. The photo is dated ‘guess 1960s’ but we can see a poster for the 1977 American mystery film The Late Show (Robert Benton, 1977) taped to the wall of the press room next to a chalk-marked blackboard. This allows us to date the press conference to 1977 (or later). The Late Show was directed by Robert Benton and produced by the award-winning Robert Altman and starred Art Carney and Lily Tomlin whose names feature on the poster.
