The award was for the best film in the educational section for the Irish-spoken Fior Uisce (Water Wisdom), which was sponsored by the Department of Local Government. Narrated by Niall Tóibín, and filmed in Ring and Old Parish, Waterford, it was aimed at encouraging rural communities to provide themselves with piped water, at a time when four out of five homes relied on non-tapped water. Ruth Barton notes in her book, Irish National Cinema (Routledge, 2004:68), that Ó Laoghaire’s film was so close to Soviet filmmaking practices, both in style and temperament, the Soviet delegation at the 1962 Cork Film Festival expressed an interest in inviting Ó Laoghaire to the (then) USSR. As well as working for RTÉ, Ó Laoghaire also produced and directed Gael Linn cinema newsreels for many years. In addition to Fior Uisce, his filmography includes Tony Bacillus & Co (1946), a short silent film which used puppets to fight the tuberculosis germ, Irish Gossamer (1958), which was commissioned by the Irish Tourist Board to encourage visitors to Ireland, and Gaeltacht, a series of programmes looking at life in the Gaeltacht in the late 1960s. Sheamus Smith, on the left in a leather jacket, started his career as a photojournalist for the now defunct Dublin paper Evening Press before moving to Canada to study film and television. He returned to Ireland in 1961 to join the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) starting as a cameraman before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. Later he was appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). Sitting in the middle is the Cork-born RTÉ television broadcaster and Irish Film Board Chairman Bill O’Herlihy (1938-2015). He grew up in Glasheen in Cork and attended Glasheen Boys' national school, and St Finbarr’s College in Farranferris, leaving school at fifteen to join the Cork Examiner before working for RTÉ. He would become a household name best known for his sports coverage, along with co-presenters Eamon Dunphy and John Giles, on programmes such as Sunday Sport and Sports Stadium and in his time presented 10 FIFA World Cups and 10 Summer Olympic Games. O’Herlihy was a keen cinephile and brought this to his work at the film board. O’Herlihy promoted the film industry and in particular was keen to develop filming in rural Ireland; he worked for some time as PR for the Cork Film Festival where he emphasised the focus on Irish film. Born in 1930 in California, he worked all his life for Walt Disney Productions and made a significant impact on its direction, striving to keep it from being split up by fellow Disney executives. Disney became an adopted native of Cork when he purchased Coolmain Castle near Killbrittan, Cork in the early 1990s and, being a keen sailor, was a regular visitor to Cork race week before his death in 2009. He stands behind Jane Seymour in this picture, looking down, as she looks up and smiles at the camera. Born in 1951, Seymour has an extensive stage and screen career. She is probably best known for roles in the James Bond film Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton, 1973), Somewhere in Time (Jeannot Szwarc, 1980) with Christopher Plummer and Christopher Reeve, and the miniseries East Of Eden (1981) winning her a Golden Globe. She has numerous television credits including The Onedin Line (1972) with Peter Gilmore (who also came to the Cork Film Festival), Onassis: The Richest Man in the World (1988), for which she won an Emmy Award, and the long-running show Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993-1998). Seymour also worked alongside Patrick Wayne on the fantasy film Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (Sam Wanamaker, 1977). A bearded Patrick Wayne, stands on the left of this photo. Born in 1939, he is the son of the actor John Wayne (1907-1979) and would act in eleven films alongside his father including the John Ford classics: The Quiet Man (1952), Mister Roberts (1955), The Long Gray Line (1955), and The Searchers (1956). Sweeney (1909-1991) was an RTÉ radio broadcaster and producer; the RTÉ archives notes that he started work with RTÉ in the 1950s and was a producer on RTÉ Radio's Sunday Miscellany for many years. He is shown in this photo wearing a dark suit and holding a microphone close up towards Addams, who is caught in mid-conversation with him. Addams is wearing a light-coloured dress tied at the waist and is shown resting her right elbow on the table next to her, which also holds the recording equipment. In her left hand she holds a cigarette and wears a small watch at her wrist. Addams had an illustrious and somewhat controversial relationship with the film festival. Due in part she admitted years later to the advice of her publicist advising her to court publicity. In particular her request, during the 1957 film festival, for a milk bath at the at the Cork Metropole Hotel caused much commotion in the press; it was shot down by the manager of the hotel, Douglas Vance, because "the people of Cork are finding it hard to make ends meet."
