Programme listings include a programme of features and shorts for a Canadian film week which was staged with the collaboration of Jean Lefebvre, Canadian Secretary of the State Department. In addition, the Association of Independent Producers Ireland (AIP) curated an Irish Showcase of feature films and shorts including Cry of the Mountain (Eamon de Buitlear); The Special Per Cent (Jim Sherwin); Revival – Pearse’s Concept of Ireland (Louis Marcus); So … Who Needs the Training (Tiernan MacBride) with Niall Tóibín; and Portrait of a Library (Kieran Hickey) starring Cyril Cusack. We note an article by Vida Breen, Cork Film Festival – 25 years on (pp.7-8), that references the origins of the festival and the London Friends of Cork whose work raised thousands of pounds for the festival. Film listings include Pigs (Thaddeus O’Sullivan, 1984); Looking for Dev (Gerry Sandford and Stephen Ryan, 1984); Samuel Beckett – Silence to Silence (Sean O Mordha, 1984); and Man of Aran (Robert J Flaherty, 1934). Since 1984 was the centenary of the birth of Robert Flaherty and the fiftieth anniversary of the first screening of Man of Aran, a lecture was given that year in his honour (p.15). We note the Australian film Constance (Bruce Morrison, 1984) starring Shane Briant. Briant was a visitor to the festival in the early seventies and some of his images can be found in the archive. A short article about the forthcoming Cork 800 celebrations can be found at the back of the programme.
