The cover is off-white with a line drawing depicting a cinema with outline figures of people queuing up outside to enter. To the right are spotlights throwing up star-flecked light to the right edge of the programme. It is a soft card-bound issue measuring 21.5cm x 28cm. The bind is stapled and it has 18 unnumbered pages together with a loose-leaf insert of the film details within. The programme was issued for the screening of The Towering Inferno to aid Cork Film International. The film was screened at the Savoy Cinema, Cork on Saturday 1 February 1975. The programme was compiled, printed and presented to Cork Film International by the London Friends of Cork. Syms, in a bright knee-length dress and cigarette in hand, is turned towards her companions, Bernard McDonagh and Noel Harrington, in conversation. The small group includes the festival director Dermot Breen on the left next to Frank O’Leary who was a member of the organising committee. The undated photo notes that the association of London friends was founded by Bernard McDonagh, a committee member of the London Film Society. Born in 1934, Sylvia Syms has a prolific film and television career. Her second film My Teenage Daughter (Herbert Wilcox, 1956) also starred Anna Neagle who was a visitor to the festival when My Teenage Daughter opened at the Savoy in 1956. Her films include Brendan Behan’s The Quare Fellow (Arthur Dreifuss, 1962), The Tamarind Seed (Blake Edwards, 1974) with Julie Andrews and Omar Sharif, Absolute Beginners (Julien Temple, 1986) with David Bowie and Patsy Kensit, and as the Queen Mother in The Queen (Stephen Frears, 2006) with Helen Mirren. Her television work includes Thatcher: The Final Days (Granada Television, 1991) where she starred as Margaret Thatcher. Her daughter Beatrice Edney (1962-) is also an English actor with many film and television appearances including Highlander (1986, 2000), Inspector Morse (1989), Lewis (2013), and Poldark (2015-2019). The photographs, by the photographer Donal Sheehan, include the festival director Dermot Breen holding forth alongside the journalist and artist Frank Sanquest, Dick Beamish, and journalist Larry Lyons. They are sitting around a table which is scattered with the detritus of the day including papers, ashtrays, and a black Ericsson Dialog-style telephone. Frank Sanquest, sitting on the far left of the photo, wearing a striped shirt with a dickie-bow, was a Cork-born artist who specialised in portraiture and landscapes. He studied art at the Cork Crawford School of Art and London’s Central School of Art and the College of Printing before returning to Cork. He was a past president of the Munster Fine Art Society and for many years was resident set designer for the Cork Opera House. He was an excellent scene painter and his work at the Cork Opera House included the set for Oklahoma in the 1950s when Dan Donovan was directing for the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James Healy which toured with John B Keane plays often with the Cork actor Michael Twomey. They had great success with Sive in 1959. From 1940 to 1987 Sanquest also worked as the Arts Editor for The Cork Examiner, in whose capacity he might have been attending the Film Festival press briefings. He died in 2008, age 95. The journalist Larry Lyons, sitting behind Dick Beamish by the wall, also worked for The Cork Examiner in the 1970s; his journalism covered the fraught days of the troubles in the early 1970s as well as film reviews. Robin O’Sullivan, on the left, was a committed member of the Cork Film Festival team and would run it for a few years in the early eighties after the sudden death of the then-festival director, Dermot Breen, in 1978. Judy Geeson (1948-) was a popular film, television, and stage actor whose role playing the young student, Pamela Dare, in To Sir, With Love (James Clavell, 1967) opposite Sidney Poitier secured her place in film history. This image is dated 1969-1970, when Geeson would have been around 22 years old. Her filmography includes 10 Rillington Place (Richard Fleischer, 1971) with Richard Attenborough, Dominique (Michael Anderson, 1978) with Jenny Agutter, and a supporting role in The Eagle Has Landed (John Sturges, 1976) alongside Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland and Jenny Agutter. Around the time of this picture in 1970, Geeson had just completed the little-seen One of Those Things (Hændlight uheld) (Erik Balling, 1971) starring Roy Dotrice, which was a Danish film made with a British and Japanese cast in English. She was married to Sean Kenny, the extraordinary Irish theatre designer, in 1969 until his sudden death in 1973, age 43. Some of Kenny's set designs can be seen in the theatre and performance collection of the Victoria & Albert (V&A) online digital archive. Title A name given to the resource Trevor Rhone and the Jamaican delegation at the Savoy Cinema Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Savoy Cinema, Jamaica, Trevor Rhone, Perry Henzell Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the celebrated Jamaican playwright and film director Trevor Rhone and his colleagues at the Savoy Cinema in Cork. They are walking up the stone steps of the Savoy in the company of a lady identified as Dympna Warren. Warren is turned in conversation towards her companion, in sunglasses and a dark suit, who has his head lowered as he listens to her.  Behind them Trevor Rhone, wearing a light-coloured cheesecloth shirt, is heading up the steps in the company of his colleagues. We can just make out the day-time scene behind them at the doors of the cinema, where a small crowd can be seen milling around. This photo is dated 1972 which was the year that Rhone’s successful film, co-written with Perry Henzell, The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972), was released. This gritty realist film, in which the Jamaican reggae singer Jimmy Cliff played a lead role, is credited for introducing reggae music and Jamaican culture to a global audience. It was Jamaica’s first homegrown film and arguably its greatest. When it premiered at the 1,500-seat cinema theatre in Kingston, Jamaica, in December 1972, 40,000 Jamaicans turned up. Trevor Rhone (1940-2009) grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, the last child of twenty-three. He went to drama school in England on a scholarship and on his return to Jamaica would instigate a resurgence of interest in Jamaican theatre, in particular with his 1971 play, the comedy Smile Orange. During this time he teamed up with the Jamaican director Perry Henzell to write the now seminal screenplay for The Harder They Come. Rhone made a significant impact on the literature and culture of Jamaica helping to bring it to an international audience. In 1972 he received his first award in Cork for the best-edited film (for The Harder They Come), before travelling to Brixton’s Classic Cinema in London, where he had to stand outside the cinema handing out leaflets in an attempt to woo an audience in. Rhone later made Smile Orange (1975), based on his 1971 play; while it didn’t have the same impact as his earlier film, it was well-received in the Caribbean and Jamaica and went on to win a gold medal at the Cork Film Festival in 1975. The flash of the camera lights up the detail of the light-coloured dress as the two guests linger in the foyer and smile for the camera. Behind them, we can just about make out the floral arrangements and the detail of the railings that decorated the foyer of the Savoy Cinema in Cork. Wearing evening suits accessorised with a festival ribbon they smile as they approach the entrance of the cinema - their faces lit by the flash of the press camera. A large crowd, held back by two uniformed guards, jostle for a glimpse of the stars. James Mason (1909-1984) was an English actor who found success in England and Hollywood from the 1950s through to the 1980s starring in more than 100 films. Around the time of this picture, Mason was making the war film The Blue Max (John Guillermin, 1966) which was shot at Ardmore Studios and filmed in various locations around Ireland.  Some of the aerial warfare scenes were shot at the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy, Co. Cork where James Mason, as General von Klugermann, flew several times under the spectacular railway bridge which spans the River Blackwater. Title A name given to the resource Wolf Mankowitz at the Savoy Cinema, Cork Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Wolf Mankowitz, Savoy Cinema, James Bond Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English screenwriter Wolf Mankowtiz and companions at the Savoy Cinema in Cork. The imposing figure of Mankowitz, dressed in all black, stands on the right of the photo, slightly turned to his left whilst in conversation with another man. To the left of the photo are two unidentified companions, a younger man with curly dark hair, wearing a velvet jacket accessorised with a scarf at his neck, and in front of him we can just make out the features of a young lady with similar dark curly hair, looking down with a smile on her lips. Mankowitz (1924-1998) was an award-winning English screenwriter and author known for his novels, plays, and screenplays. Mankowitz was of Jewish descent, born in the East End of London. However, following altercations with the English revenue, he moved to Ireland to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists and settled in Cork in 1971. He was a successful screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote screenplays for his own works and adapted others including A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1953) and The Millionairess (Anthony Asquith, 1960) starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. He was one of the screenwriters on the first James Bond film Dr No (Terence Young, 1962) but asked for his name to be removed from the credits as he thought it poor; he also collaborated on the Bond movie Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 1976). In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson, and Harry Towb (who can also be found in this archive). The film is set in Cork in 1921 during the War of Independence and is about the friendship between an IRA man, escaping pursuit from the Black and Tans, and an elderly man at a synagogue. Mankowitz wrote the screenplay having being told the story about an IRA man hiding in a small synagogue in Dublin’s Lennox Street (TCD Irish Film and TV Research Online: tcd.ie/irishfilm).  It was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972 and, despite the photo being marked 1960s, might suggest that the photo was taken around then. Interestingly the Guardian reported that the British M15 kept a security file on Mankowitz for more than a decade suspecting that he was a possible communist agent following his marriage to Ann Seligmann, in 1944, as she was a communist party member. The investigation was dropped when the M15 informant insisted that Mankowitz’s leftwing sympathies had disappeared noting that “He comes to the college every morning with a copy of the Times.” (Alan Travis, The Guardian, 26.08.2010.)
