The small group are standing in a busy room, decorated with promotional adverts for Harp Lager. A tentative Sally Thomsett, at the centre in a dark velour jacket, looks towards Glover as he speaks. Born in 1935, Julian Glover is an English actor of stage, television and film including The Empire Strikes Back (aka Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back) (Irvin Kershner, 1980), For Your Eyes Only (John Glen, 1981), and as the voice of Aragog, the giant spider in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) directed by Chris Columbus. Most recently he had a recurring role in Game of Thrones (2011-2016) as Grand Maester Pycelle, and has appeared in an episode of the historical television series The Crown (2019). Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Glover had appeared in Nicholas and Alexandra (Franklin J Schaffner, 1971), and Antony and Cleopatra (1972) directed by Charlton Heston who also played the main role of Mark Antony. The film was made by Rank Organisation who were key players in the early days of the film festival and would sent their stars and representatives to the festival – some of whom can be seen in the archive. Glover, standing next to a young woman identified as Yvonne O’Reilly, is looking towards Sally Thomsett in this picture. Thomsett, born in 1950, is an actor best known for her role as one of the children (Phyllis Waterbury) in the 1970 film The Railway Children directed by Lionel Jeffries. Around the time of this photo she had just completed the thriller Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971) starring Dustin Hoffman and the Irish actor Jim Norton. On the far right the fair-haired actor Shane Briant, in a velvet jacket over a white ruffled tuxedo shirt, is turned towards his companion, identified as Nora Prendergast from Cork. Briant is best known for his roles in Hammer Film Productions and worked with Virginia Wetherell, who also came to the festival in 1972, in the British horror film Demons of the Mind (1972) directed by Peter Sykes. Thomsett, on the far left with a liqueur glass in hand, looks on as the others chat. Born in 1950 she would have been around 22 years old in this picture. She had just finished the film Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971) starring Dustin Hoffman, but was best known for her role, playing the part of a young girl, in the British drama film The Railway Children (1970) written and directed by Lionel Jeffries. The bind is stapled and it has 64 numbered pages. We note the title: Cork Festival of Film which was introduced at the 1982 festival to reflect the limited programming due to financial difficulties. Film listings include Pigs (Thaddeus O’Sullivan, 1984); Looking for Dev (Gerry Sandford and Stephen Ryan, 1984); Samuel Beckett – Silence to Silence (Sean O Mordha, 1984); and Man of Aran (Robert J Flaherty, 1934). Since 1984 was the centenary of the birth of Robert Flaherty and the fiftieth anniversary of the first screening of Man of Aran, a lecture was given that year in his honour (p.15). We note the Australian film Constance (Bruce Morrison, 1984) starring Shane Briant. Briant was a visitor to the festival in the early seventies and some of his images can be found in the archive. A short article about the forthcoming Cork 800 celebrations can be found at the back of the programme. The fair-haired actor Shane Briant, in a suede jacket accessorised with a cravat, is standing on the left listening to the conversation. Wetherell, at the centre, in a dark-patterned dress, is turned to her companion and smiling. Both Wetherell and Briant worked together in the British horror film Demons of the Mind directed by Peter Sykes which was released in 1972 – the year that this photo was taken at the festival. Born in 1943, Virginia Wetherell was an English actor best known for her roles in Hammer horror films such as Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and aforementioned Demons of the Mind. She also appeared, as the naked actor tempting Malcolm McDowell as Alex, in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange in 1971. Wetherell had a large body of television work throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, including the part of Dyoni in the first Dalek story series of Doctor Who. In 1971 Wetherell opened a vintage clothes shop in London’s Notting Hill, known as Virginia, shutting down in 2015 when Wetherell (now Bates) turned 72.  Wetherell's companion in this picture is the actor and novelist, London-born Shane Briant. Briant studied at Trinity College Dublin before becoming an actor best known for his roles in Hammer Film Productions. He has many television credits, both in England and Australia where he settled, as well as film credits including the British Cold War thriller The Mackintosh Man (John Huston, 1973) with Paul Newman and James Mason (who can also be found in this archive), and as Clifford Chatterley in Lady Chatterley's Lover (Just Jaeckin, 1981). Briant's first short film, A Message from Fallujah (Richard Gibson, Shane Briant, 2005), won a 'Best of the Fest' award at the 2005 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival and was considered for an Academy Award that year.
