Designed by the Cork-born sculptor Seamus Murphy, the bronze-coloured representation of the saint is 31cm high including the base. The base in this image is faintly inscribed on its sides with a Celtic harp and the Cork coat of arms, along with the date of the festival. This award is inscribed 2009 Seamus Murphy, Naom Fionnbarra. The inscription across the base reads Cork International Film Festival Trophy by Seamus Murphy RHA.  The 1965 festival programme notes, in an article by Conor Sweeney, that the awards were used from the very beginning of the festival and that the silver and bronze awards were “lined up on Dermot’s desk”. Dermot Breen was the founder of the film festival and was its director from its inception in 1956 until his untimely death in 1978. They note that St Finbarr is the patron saint of the Diocese of Cork; born in the sixth century at Raithleann near Bandon, he was the son of Amergin, a metal worker. The sheet, annotated with a red marker, shows various award presentations, recipients, and awards. We recognise Lord Mayor Sean O’Leary (1941-2006) which helps us date this image to 1972 or 1973. We kept some examples of these contact sheets in the archive to show how photographers used positive prints from the negatives on a roll of film. This enabled the photographer to scan a series of thumbnail images to find the ‘keepers’ or the ones chosen to be enlarged. Sometimes the outtakes tell a story as much as the final chosen image. The award was for the best film in the educational section for the Irish-spoken Fior Uisce (Water Wisdom), which was sponsored by the Department of Local Government. Narrated by Niall Tóibín, and filmed in Ring and Old Parish, Waterford, it was aimed at encouraging rural communities to provide themselves with piped water, at a time when four out of five homes relied on non-tapped water. Ruth Barton notes in her book, Irish National Cinema (Routledge, 2004:68), that Ó Laoghaire’s film was so close to Soviet filmmaking practices, both in style and temperament, the Soviet delegation at the 1962 Cork Film Festival expressed an interest in inviting Ó Laoghaire to the (then) USSR. As well as working for RTÉ, Ó Laoghaire also produced and directed Gael Linn cinema newsreels for many years. In addition to Fior Uisce, his filmography includes Tony Bacillus & Co (1946), a short silent film which used puppets to fight the tuberculosis germ, Irish Gossamer (1958), which was commissioned by the Irish Tourist Board to encourage visitors to Ireland, and Gaeltacht, a series of programmes looking at life in the Gaeltacht in the late 1960s. The photo is undated but we can put it at 1976 or 1977 during the mayoralty of French. While the winner of the award, wearing a long white dress, is currently unidentified, we can just about recognise the face of the English actor, David Hemmings, on the far right. Seán French, served as Lord Mayor of Cork, from 1976 to 1977. He represented Cork in Dáil Éireann for 15 years and was a trusted confidante of former Taoiseach Jack Lynch; French ran alongside Lynch in the 1969 and 1973 general elections and would benefit from the large transfers from Lynch who had a huge surplus of votes. His father, also called Seán French, also served as both a Fianna Fáil TD and a Lord Mayor of Cork serving seven terms until his early death, age 47, in 1937. In addition to his political duties Seán French sat on the board of Glen Rovers and the Cork County Basketball Board were he was treasurer and at his funeral Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, noted that French had made an enormous contribution to public life in Cork. Title A name given to the resource St Finbarr statuette Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, St Finbarr Statuette, Award, Trophy, Seamus Murphy Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the St Finbarr statuette that was designed by the Cork-born sculptor Seamus Murphy. The award itself is 31cm high including the base. The inscription across the base reads Cork International Film Festival Trophy by Seamus Murphy RHA. The award has inscriptions on its base of a Celtic harp and the Cork coat of arms. Later awards - molded from the original template - have the same inscriptions accompanied by the year of the festival. The sculptor Seamus Murphy was based at his studio on Watercourse Road in Blackpool, Cork. Murphy was inspired by the politician, writer, and academic Daniel Corkery, then a teacher at his school, to attend the Cork Crawford School of Art. After receiving a scholarship, Murphy later went to Paris to study under the Irish-American Sculptor Andrew O’Connor before returning to Cork and opening up his studio. Murphy was commissioned to design the Church of the Annunciation in Blackpool, Cork, as well several unique carvings around the City and beyond. Seventy-five examples of his monuments can be seen in the cemetery of St Finn Barre’s Cathedral especially in ‘Musicians’ Corner’. A favourite City monument is his limestone drinking trough for dogs – marked Madraí; it is tucked away at the top of Patrick’s Street under a now empty shopfront at number 121. The convivial group is dressed formally, and Marten, wearing a flower-decorated light-coloured dress, is looking up to Barry who is smoking. A whorl of smoke rises up through the air, crowning Barry, who is turned towards Marten as he listens to her. The picture is provisionally dated ‘1970s’ and would have been taken a few years before Murphy’s death in 1975. We have a particular affection for Seamus Murphy in the archive as he designed the St Finbarr statuette which was handed out as a film festival award for many years. A short documentary about Seamus Murphy, <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art </a>(1958) by Louis Marcus, premiered at the festival in 1959. Murphy was married to Maigread, who was a founder of the Cork Arts Society and the Cork Film Society. She was a gifted artist in her own right and designed the well-known Paddy Irish Whisky logo. They met at the Cork Crawford School of Art and went on to have three children, the novelist Orla Murphy, the musician Colm Murphy, and the designer Bebhinn Marten who we see in this picture talking to Peter Barry. Bebhinn Marten is a knitwear designer based in Baltimore, Cork. Her company, Beacon Designs, developed during the 1970s, was one of the few knitwear companies designing and manufacturing in Ireland. However, due to the decline in the Irish woolen industry, the knitwear factory shut down and she converted the factory into a home.
