The girls, in matching red frocks accessorised with a white headband, line up with the boys, in their black trousers and white shirts, across the chancel of the altar. The back of the photo notes that the children sitting on the chairs at the front of the choir are the young Donal Lehane and Grainne Breen – the daughter of the festival founder Dermot Breen and his wife Vida. This image is one of the few colour photographs in the archive and provides us with a beautiful rendition of the notable mosaic interior of the church. The mosaics were designed by the Italian artist Umberto Noni who counted his work at this church as one of his most accomplished creations. The pews are full and those without seats stand up against the church walls. We notice the Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary kneeling at the outside edge of the front pew, folded hands resting under his chin. Across the aisle the former Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy, kneels next to the festival director Dermot Breen, and his wife Vida who wears a white lace veil. Along the church pew the congregation kneel in prayer, some holding rosary beads. The presence of Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary helps us date this photo to 1972 or 1973. His head is lowered as he attends to the signing, his distinctive dark hair swept to the right with sideburns framing his lowered face. A few children look towards the camera and catch its attention. Bernard Geary (1934-) is a Cork musician, composer, and teacher, born in Gurranabraher where his parents ran a grocery shop. He studied music at the University College Cork during the 1950s and was encouraged in his compositions by Professor Aloys Fleischmann. His early compositions include work for the RTÉ String Quartet (String Quartet No.1, 1960), the Cork Symphony Orchestra (Provocation, 1960), and the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra (Amran Dochais, 1963) as well as vocal and choral works and incidental music for radio. Geary composed a nine-movement Mass of Saint Finbarr for tenor, choir, and organ in 1973 which was first performed at the Church of St. Francis in Cork with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film Festival Choir. It was commissioned by the Cork Film Festival and we might imagine that this photo is probably taken after the premiere of the Mass in June of that year. Given this, while this photo is marked ‘1970s’ we might pin its date down to 1973 or 1974 when he also conducted his mass for the festival. In 1975 Geary conducted the Mass of Saint Patrick which was composed by Philip Green. Geary was commissioned to compose Celebration of Cork for the opening of Cork 800 in 1985 which marked the anniversary of the founding of the city. The work was based on texts drawn from various writings including Edmund Spenser, Seán Ó Faoláin, and the Cork poet Father Prout (Francis Sylvester O’Mahony) and was revived for the Cork Choral Festival in 2018 (David Wright, wrightmusic.net; Cathy Desmond, Cork Examiner, 17.04.2018). Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, judge and Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972. (So while this photo is not dated we can date it as 1972 given his term of office.) O'Leary studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. He noted that holding the Mayoralty of Cork was one of the greatest honors of his life. ('Esteemed judge, mayor and senator was a backroom giant', Irish Independent, 06.01.2007) In this image O'Leary is standing at the altar of the Byzantine-styled red-brick Church and Friary of St Francis which is distinguished by its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light, and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Umberto Noni. Title A name given to the resource Festival Mass with Joe Tomelty Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Joe Tomelty, Festival Mass, St Francis Church, Liberty Street, Cork Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of Joseph Tomelty, the Irish character actor, novelist and playwright, reading from the pulpit of St. Francis' Church on Liberty Street in Cork. Joseph Tomelty (1911-1995) was a cultural tour de force from the North of Ireland known for his work on radio as well as the stage. His was a familiar face on the screen, with his distinctive white-haired, bushy-browed features. Born in County Down, on the east coast of Ulster, he was based in Northern Ireland where he made a significant contribution to its cultural history. He was instrumental in founding and managing the Group Theatre in Belfast in 1940 where his plays would be staged (apart from the controversial 1944 play The End House, which was premiered at the Abbey Theatre because the Northern theatres wouldn't show it). He wrote comedy dramas for the BBC, in particular The McCooeys which lasted seven years. He also worked in Hollywood but it was for his enduring committment to the North of Ireland that he is fondly remembered. In this image Tomelty is standing at the altar of the Byzantine-styled red-brick Church and Friary of St Francis. Behind him we can make out the elaborate decorated mosaic tiles of the apse behind the altar and beside him four priests stand with hands folded in prayer. St Francis Church was founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork City Courthouse and partially stands on the site of old Broad Lane Church. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr Mass. We can see the back of the choir, facing the conductor, as they sing. The conductor is looking down at his music - his arms raised in gesticulation. To the right of the choir an organist, his music strewn on the lid of the piano, accompanies the choir. Below them we can see the congregation seated in church pews that stretch before us and up as far as the mosaic-tiled apse that surrounds the marble altar. The Church is not identified but we can tell from this photo that it is the interior of St Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. With its Byzantine-styled red-brick exterior the Church and Friary of St Francis was founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century, before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork Courthouse and partially stands on the site of old Broad Lane Church. Whilst typical in style for 1950s Ireland it retains notable interior fittings that distinguish it, such as its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Professor Umberto Noni who declared it to be 'the very crowning of [his] life's work'. The pews are full and at the back of the Church, by the stained glass doors, we can just about make out the crowds standing by the open doors of the Church. The Church is not identified but we can tell from this photo that it is the interior of St Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. St Francis Church is a Byzantine-style red-brick church and friary founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century, before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork City Courthouse and partially stands on the site of the old Broad Lane Church. Whilst typical in style for 1950s Ireland it retains notable interior fittings that distinguish it, such as its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light, and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Umberto Noni. When it was being built in 1954 workmen found part of the old city wall of Cork and an inscribed stone dated '1586' which is now part of the wall of the friary. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr mass.
