Hosted by the London Friends of Cork, and organised by Tom Nicholas, the London reception was a regular event, sometimes held at the iconic Martini Terrace at New Zealand House, and attended by celebrities and friends of the festival. Greg Smith (1939-2009), standing on the left wearing a light-coloured fitted jacket, was the producer behind a series of X-rated successful movies during the 1970s including Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). His collaborations with the Irish director Norman Cohen also include Spike Milligan’s war memoirs: Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (Norman Cohen, 1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977), starring Lynda Bellingham and Pamela Stephenson both of whom are in the archive. Born in London, Smith worked in theatre as a young boy before establishing a talent agency in London where he signed on the Irish filmmaker Cohen. With the relaxation of censorship laws in the UK, Smith and Cohen turned a series of risqué best-selling paperback books, by Christopher Wood, into a successful run of Confessions movies. Smith went on to produce Stand up, Virgin Soldiers, starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham who worked in many of his movies during this era. Lynda Bellingham (1948-2014) was an English actor, broadcaster, and author who was a familiar presence on British television, in particular for her work as lunchtime chat show host on Loose Women between 2007 and 2011, with whom she made more than 300 appearances. She also had a long-standing television career in such shows as All Creatures Great and Small and as the Inquisitor in the Doctor Who serial Trial of a Time Lord in 1986. Beyond her film work in the Smith and Cohen film productions, she worked in theatre, pantomime, radio, and TV commercials, in particular on the long-running 'Oxo Family' campaign. We recognise some of the delegates from the archive including the film director Terry Gilliam and the actor Linda Hayden, together with the film censor Sheamus Smith and Tom Nicholas from London Friends of Cork. Terry Gilliam, standing at the centre, smiling broadly at the camera with his arm around the shoulder of Linda Hayden, is an actor, screen writer, director and former member of the Monty Python comedy team. He has directed 13 feature films including Brazil (1985), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and most recently The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). At the time of this picture, taken in the 1970s, Gilliam, who started his career as a cartoonist, was the main animator for the award-winnng BBC sketch comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus which ran from 1969 to 1974. His penchant for the surreal and fantastical can be seen in his future film work which often feature black comedy with a twist.  Linda Hayden, seen here next to Gilliam wearing a fur-trimmed coat and smiling at the camera, features heavily in the Cork Film Festival archive. She came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers and was often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham with whom she starred in the Confessions series of movies. Born in 1953, Linda Hayden was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977) and the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976). Controversially she appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith was the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith  – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. Title A name given to the resource Cork Film International Reception, London Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Richard Beamish, Tom Nicholas, London Friends of Cork, Martini Terrace, London Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the festival director, Dermot Breen, with the vice-chairman of the festival committee, Richard (Dick) Beamish, and Tom Nicholas (centre) from the London Friends of Cork. They are attending a reception at the Martini Terrace in London, where details of the 20th Cork Film International Festival were announced (which allows us to date this photo 1975). The Martini Terrace is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House located at the corner of Haymarket and the Pall Mall in London. It was built in 1959 and was, and is, a controversial building being the only skyscraper in this locality. The terrace was used for receptions and launches and has a view over Trafalgar Square. In 1992 it was listed Grade II cementing its place in the architectural history of London.
