Designed by the Cork-born sculptor Seamus Murphy, the bronze-coloured representation of the saint is 31cm high including the base. The base in this image is faintly inscribed on its sides with a Celtic harp and the Cork coat of arms, along with the date of the festival. This award is inscribed 2009 Seamus Murphy, Naom Fionnbarra. The inscription across the base reads Cork International Film Festival Trophy by Seamus Murphy RHA.  The 1965 festival programme notes, in an article by Conor Sweeney, that the awards were used from the very beginning of the festival and that the silver and bronze awards were “lined up on Dermot’s desk”. The sculptor Seamus Murphy was based at his studio on Watercourse Road in Blackpool, Cork. Murphy was inspired by the politician, writer, and academic Daniel Corkery, then a teacher at his school, to attend the Cork Crawford School of Art. After receiving a scholarship, Murphy later went to Paris to study under the Irish-American Sculptor Andrew O’Connor before returning to Cork and opening up his studio. Murphy was commissioned to design the Church of the Annunciation in Blackpool, Cork, as well several unique carvings around the City and beyond. Seventy-five examples of his monuments can be seen in the cemetery of St Finn Barre’s Cathedral especially in ‘Musicians’ Corner’. Hayden, in a light-coloured jumpsuit, sits on the edge of a small round table looking down at the enamelled glass-trimmed trophy which sits on a wooden base with an inscribed plaque. As far as we can determine the trophy is engraved Presented by the Commission of the European Communities, and might be presented to the festival as part of the Commission’s support of the festival through their Creative Europe MEDIA programme. Linda Hayden came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers, often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham with whom she starred in the Confessions series of movies. Born in 1953 she was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977) and the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976) which was re-released with cuts, as Stalker (Martin Kemp, 1997). Controversially Hayden appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. She would have been too young to see her own movie which was rated X in British cinemas and abroad. The New York Times noted that Baby Love was: “… meaningful and even moving. Baby Love however is basically a chiller, like the dripping water with the initial credits – a drop, a trickle, and a cold flow.” She followed this foray into horror films with Hammer’s Taste the Blood of Dracula (Peter Sasdy,1970) starring Christopher Lee, and The Blood on Satan’s Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971) before making her name with the Confession comedies so beloved of the seventies. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith would be the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith’s wedding – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. They are both wearing dark suits with a bow-tie, and Preminger is shown, on the left, in profile accepting the award from Lynch who is smiling at him. Jack Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. At the time of this picture (marked as 1957) he served as Minister for Education and Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs. He is also played Gaelic sports for Cork and is regarded as one of the greatest dual players of all-time. Otto Preminger (1905-1986) was born in Austria-Hungary but fled to Austria with his family after the breakout of the first World War. He went on to work for Fox Studios in Los Angeles and was known for defying the censorship code of Hollywood with his controversial films. He directed more than 35 feature films including the Oscar-nominated The Moon is Blue (1953) with the English actor Dawn Addams who was a frequent visitor to the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s. In this picture, Preminger is being presented with a silver-plated single-column trophy engraved with the Cork coat of arms on the front. While we cannot see the detail in this picture, we know from <a href="https://corkfilmfest.ucc.ie/items/show/206">another image</a> in the archive that the award is topped with a film reel and that a film ribbon motif is replicated at various levels of the column. The Lord Mayor Seán French, wearing his chain of office, is seated behind Hemmings next to the former Lord Mayor Gus Healy. Some of the other nine delegates are provisionally identified at the back of the photo as the Everyman Theatre founder, and Presentation Brothers College (PBC) teacher, Dan Donovan, Teddy O’Brien, festival director Dermot Breen, and Dorinda Coomber.  David Hemmings was an English actor, director, and producer who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer (which might have been based on David Bailey), in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). His filmography includes The Charge of the Light Brigade (Tony Richardson, 1968), Alfred the Great (Clive Donner, 1969) (which was filmed in Ireland), Juggernaut (Richard Lester, 1974), with Richard Harris and Omar Sharif, and the gangster movie The Squeeze (Michael Apted, 1977) with Stacy Keach and Edward Fox. Distracted by television roles and running his company, Hemdale Corporation, during the 1980s, his credits include Magnum PI, Airwolf, The A-Team, and Quantum Leap. By the 2000s his return to film was well-received and included the role of ‘Cassius’ in Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000), and the role of ‘Lenny’ in the poignant Last Orders (2001), alongside Tom Courtenay and Michael Caine, which was shown at the 46th edition of the Cork Film Festival in 2001. His role in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (2003), with Sean Connery, was one his final roles before his unexpected death in Romania in 2003, age 62, whilst filming the British-Romanian horror film Blessed (a.k.a.Samantha’s Child) (Simon Fellows, 2004) with Heather Graham and James Purefoy. The award is placed on a small circular table in a dining room where we can just make out some people milling around in the background. One of the men appear to be wearing a mayoral chain and given the date of the award we might suspect that this is the Fine Gael politician Jim Corr (1934-) who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1979. The award itself is distinctive consisting of three bronze, or pewter, skeletal attenuated figures, much in the style of the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. The figures are leaning in towards each other whilst holding their arms aloft towards a European Union logo similar to the Euro symbol. This euro symbol, adorned with a dove in this case, was (and is) a tangible symbol of European unity for citizens of the European Union. The Cork Film Festival was particularly indebted to European Union funding during this era via the MEDIA Programme of the European Union designed to support the European film and audio-visual industries.
