<text>The original 1980 programme is a slim soft card-bound issue measuring 26.5cm x 11cm. The bind is stapled and it has 82 numbered pages.

The pdf version includes profiles of festival jury members Michael O’Herlihy (Ireland), Carmen Dillon (UK), Dagmar Hirtz (Germany), Patrick Carey (Ireland), Bert Haanstra (Netherlands), Joy Batchelor (UK), Jerzy Bossak (Poland), Tony Barry (Ireland) and Ronnie Saunders (Ireland). Programme listings include a programme of features and shorts for a Canadian film week which was staged with the collaboration of Jean Lefebvre, Canadian Secretary of the State Department. In addition, the Association of Independent Producers Ireland (AIP) curated an Irish Showcase of feature films and shorts including Cry of the Mountain (Eamon de Buitlear); The Special Per Cent (Jim Sherwin); Revival – Pearse’s Concept of Ireland (Louis Marcus); So … Who Needs the Training (Tiernan MacBride) with Niall Tóibín; and Portrait of a Library (Kieran Hickey) starring Cyril Cusack. The programme also details a John Boorman Season (p.76) and a selection of his films was shown that year. We note an article by Vida Breen, Cork Film Festival – 25 years on (pp.7-8), that references the origins of the festival and the London Friends of Cork whose work raised thousands of pounds for the festival. The brochure also includes a number of advertisements from local and national companies across all sectors of the business world.</text>

<text>This is an undated black and white photo of the congregation at a film festival mass in St Francis Church, Cork. The pews are full and those without seats stand up against the church walls. We notice the Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary kneeling at the outside edge of the front pew, folded hands resting under his chin. Across the aisle the former Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy, kneels next to the festival director Dermot Breen, and his wife Vida who wears a white lace veil. Along the church pew the congregation kneel in prayer, some holding rosary beads. The presence of Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary helps us date this photo to 1972 or 1973.</text>

<text>This is a black and white photo of the actor Robert Shaw and Vida Breen at the entrance of the Capitol Cinema in Cork. Robert Shaw, in a dress suit, looks up towards the camera smiling, his hand linked through Vida Breen’s arm. She is dressed in a flouncy white top over a long chevron-patterned skirt, and smiles as she steps forward towards the cinema. Behind her, we can just make out her husband, the festival director Dermot Breen with Robin O’Sullivan. A small crowd gathers around them accompanied by a photographer and a guard. Beyond them the traffic turns down towards Washington Street onto the Western Road.

The Capitol Cinema was located at the junction of the Grand Parade and Washington Street. It opened in 1947 with the Bob Hope and Joan Caulfield comedy Monsieur Beaucaire (George Marshall, 1946). The cinema originally held over 1,300 patrons and at the time had one of the best operating systems in the country including a new magnetic sound system pioneered by 20th Century Fox. The sound from the speakers was so realistic that children ran out of the cinema crying when thunder broke out in the first showing of a film. It originally held a restaurant which was converted into a second screen in 1974, with seats for 105 patrons. Before long in 1989 it was converted into the city’s first multiplex with six screens. The new Capitol Cineplex was a popular cinema bringing movie blockbusters to the people of Cork until its closure in 2005 and conversion into a shopping and office block in 2017. The last film shown at the Cineplex was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Mike Newell, 2005) and The Constant Gardener (Fernando Meirelles, 2005). (John McSweeney, The Golden Age of Cork Cinemas, Rose Arch Publications, 2013.)

Robert Shaw (1927-1978) was an English actor, novelist and playwright. In 1961 he won the Hawthornden Prize, a British literary award established by the English philanthropist, Alice Warrender, for his second novel, The Sun Doctor. He had a successful television and stage career with productions on Stratford and Broadway including Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker (1961) with Donald Pleasance and Alan Bates which was reprised in the 1963 film The Caretaker directed by Clive Donner. His long list of films includes A Man for all Seasons (Fred Zinnemann, 1966) for which he was Oscar-nominated for his role as Henry VIII. Following this he went on to have a successful film career including The Sting (George Roy Hill, 1973) and Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975) with Roy Scheider.

Robert Shaw had ten children. His son, the actor Ian Shaw, was to portray his father in a West End play, The Shark is Broken (2020), about the beleaguered Jaws shoot directed by Guy Masterson. His grandchild, Ferdia Shaw, starred as the lead role in the Disney adaptation of Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl (2020), directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Judie Dench and Colin Farrell.

At the time of this picture, dated 1976, Shaw had just starred in the British-American romance and adventure film Robin and Marian (Richard Lester, 1976) alongside Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. The director of Robin and Marian, Richard Lester, was also a visitor to the Cork Film Festival in the seventies. Shaw had a home in Tourmakeady, County Mayo, and died close by his home from a heart attack in 1978, just two years after this picture was taken, age 51.</text>

<text>This is a black and white photo of the Chinese actor, director, and author Tsai Chin with a group of delegates identified at the back of the photo as Alan Buttonshaw, Vida Breen, Robin O'Sullivan, Frank O'Reilly, and Kevin Breen. The formally dressed group, some with a glass in their hand, are chatting and oblivious to the camera while Tsai Chin, wearing an elaborately beaded jacket accessorised with an ornate necklace, faces the camera smiling.

This is a unique film festival image, dated 1970s, of Tsai Chin. Chin is a Chinese actor born in 1933 and working to this day (2020). The daughter of Zhou Xinfang, a renowned master of the Peking Opera, she was the first Chinese student to study in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), the first Chinese actor to star in a West End show, and shored up the exotic quotient in movies such as Bond’s You Only Live Twice (Lewis Gilbert, 1967) and the Fu Manchu film franchise. In the 1960s she shot to fame when starring as 'Suzie,' the Hong Kong prostitute, in the 1959 West End play The World of Suzie Wong based on the book by Richard Mason; she would follow this with extensive work on stage, television, and screen including The Face of Fu Manchu (Don Sharp, 1965), The Virgin Soldiers (Leslie Thomas, 1966), The Joy Luck Club (Wayne Wang, 1993), Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 2006) and most recently the voice of ‘Nai Nai’ in the computer-animated adventure Abominable (Jill Culton, 2019). Wishing to break away from being typecast as an exotic ingénue she later took roles that challenged the stereotypes of Asian women on the screen.

In 1988 Tsai Chin published her autobiography, Daughter of Shanghai, which recalls her early, and sometimes tragic, life including her early life in Shanghai, and her parents’ brutal deaths during the cultural revolution. It was a worldwide success and inspired the film of the same name, starring Tsai Chin, and directed by Michelle Chen Miao in 2019. <text>This is a black and white photo of the actor David Kelly at the festival club with Vida Breen and Margaret Kerrigan. The formally dressed group are sitting, with a colleague identified as Vaz Anderson, under an umbrella at the busy Harp Lager-sponsored festival club surrounded by other festival patrons.

Margaret Kerrigan, sitting on the far right next to David Kelly, was the wife of the labour politician Patrick Kerrigan, who served Cork as Lord Mayor from 1973 to 1974. He was nominated to the 13th Seanad by Liam Cosgrave, the then-Taoiseach, where he served until 1977. Kerrigan won a seat in the Cork City constituency in the 1977 general election and took his seat that year before dying two years later, age 51. They had four children, one of whom, Cathal Kerrigan, worked as a librarian in UCC for many years before his retirement in 2020. He recently collaborated with the Germany-based artist Padraig Robinson on his book Gaze Against Imperialism (Metaflux Publishing, 2019).

The actor David Kelly appears in the archive on a number of occasions. Around the time of this photo, which is dated 1972 – but it might be 1973 or 1974 to coincide with the mayoralty of Patrick Kerrigan – Kelly had just completed the rarely seen 1973 British comedy film Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width (Ronnie Baxter, 1973) which also starred the Irish actor Joe Lynch (1925-2001).</text>

Vida Breen (née Daly), wearing a white blouse over a chevron-patterned skirt, is turned to her companion, listening as he talks. She was the wife of the festival director, Dermot Breen, who died unexpectedly in 1978. Vida died almost forty years later in 2017.

The Fianna Fáil politician Jack Lynch, seated across from Breen on the far right, is talking to his companion while resting his hands on the table. (We note that while this photo is dated 1960s, the three men in this picture are wearing brightly-patterned wide ties reminiscent of the 1970s, and not of the 1960s which favoured the narrow tie.) During the 1960s Jack Lynch worked as a parliamentary secretary for Eamon de Valera succeeding Sean Lemass in 1966. He would later serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979.</text>
