Dressed in white trousers and a checkered shirt, Peters is leaning back and holding a local guide book of Cork while smiling at the camera; her legs dangle over the chrome trim of the car’s radiator grill, next to the iconic Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star. Two small Irish flags adorn the car either side of the grill which might suggest that this was the Lord Mayor’s car. Behind Peters in the distance we can see the imposing three spires of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral. Designed by William Burges, and built 1827-81 from Cork limestone, the cathedral is located on the south side of the River Lee in Cork City. Burges designed it to be compact in a French Gothic style, with a narrow interior that soars to a great height. Its three spires stand out for their intricate architectural details including gargoyles and such embellishments throughout. Approximately 844 sculptures adorn the interior and exterior including 32 gargoyles and the twelve Apostles of The Last Judgement at the Tympanum over the entrance door. In this photo we cannot really make out the copper gilt-edged Resurrection Angle, also known fondly as the 'Goldie Angel' by locals, which adorns the main spire in place of a cross - a gift from the Victorian architect to the city. Mollie Peters was the stage name of Vivien Mollie Humphrey, an English actor best known for her role as Nurse Patricia Fearing opposite Sean Connery's 007 in Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). She was infamous for being the first Bond girl to take off her clothes on-screen - earning the franchise its first X-rating. Peters had a short-lived film career due mainly to contractual disagreements with her agent which forestalled her career. Title A name given to the resource Drive-in movie theatre Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Drive-in Description An account of the resource This is a colour publicity photo from the Irish Examiner for the 51st Cork Film Festival in 2006. It shows an outdoor drive-in movie theatre with a large outdoor screen and a parking area full of cars facing the screen. The screen shows the actor Anthony Hopkins in a scene from the 1991 blockbuster movie The Silence of the Lambs directed by Johnathan Demme. The glow of the screen lights up the parking lot, while in the back-ground the city lights twinkle in the dark. Drive-in movie theatres have been around since the 1920s with the first one being patented in America in the 1930s. With the rise of car ownership in the 1940s and 1950s, drive-in theatres became popular ways for families to watch movies, especially in rural areas. They were also great places for young couples to meet and date, as we saw in the movie Grease (Randal Kleiser, 1978). With the advent of home entertainment and real estate costs, drive-in attendance declined from the 1970s through to the late 1990s. However, their retro-nostalgic appeal created a mini-boom in America which ebbs and flows, dictated by economics (car use, price of oil), access to cinema via online streaming, or coronavirus pandemic.  Ireland’s first drive-in cinema, Movie Junction, was based at Carrigtwohill in Cork for almost ten years, until its closure in 2019. However, with the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, drive-in cinemas are making a come-back as patrons can enjoy a movie while maintaining social distancing. In 2020, Iran had its first post-revolution drive-in film, showing Exodus by the Iranian filmmaker Ebrahim Hatamikia. Hatamikia’s drama movie was due to be released in theatres around Iran in March 2020 but, due to the pandemic, it went directly to online screening before hitting the big outdoor screen under the iconic Milad tower in the capital Tehran. And, much like drive-in cinemas have always done, patrons sat in their cars, albeit having been sprayed with disinfectant in this case, and listened to the movie via their FM car radio. The rear of the photo identifies the delegate as ‘Turget, Billus-Turkish Film’. To the right of the shot, we recognise Robin O’Sullivan turned towards his companions. The 1970 festival programme notes that the short Turkish film Separate Worlds (Ayri Dünyalar) was shown that year. This might be an image of the director and producer Turgut N. Demirag. Demirag (1921-1987) was a Turkish film producer, director and screenwriter active between 1947-1973. His film Love and Grudge (1964) was entered into the Moscow International Film Festival in 1964. Crosbie and Breen, on the left of the photo, are meeting festival delegates off the Aer Lingus flight behind them. The photo identifies only the actor and director Lionel Jeffries and Larry Doyle. Lionel Jeffries (1926-2010), with his distinctive moustache, was an English actor, director and screenwriter. He served in the Second World War and was awarded the campaign medal Burma Star for his contribution to the war effort. Jeffries has an extensive filmography but is perhaps best known for The Railway Children (1970) which he wrote and directed. We note that while this photo is dated 1960s it might be 1964 as the Columbia-produced film The First Men in the Moon (Nathan Juran, 1964), starring Jeffries, was screened at the film festival that year on 17 September 1964. Columbia executives were also in attendance and might be included in this picture. On the far left we recognise the English actor Peter Cushing (1913-1994) who was best known for his roles as Baron Frankenstein and Doctor Van Helsing in the Hammer Productions horror films. Cushing also appeared as Tarkin, in Star Wars (1977) written and directed by George Lucas. We recognise some of the delegates from the archive including the film director Terry Gilliam and the actor Linda Hayden, together with the film censor Sheamus Smith and Tom Nicholas from London Friends of Cork. Terry Gilliam, standing at the centre, smiling broadly at the camera with his arm around the shoulder of Linda Hayden, is an actor, screen writer, director and former member of the Monty Python comedy team. He has directed 13 feature films including Brazil (1985), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and most recently The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). At the time of this picture, taken in the 1970s, Gilliam, who started his career as a cartoonist, was the main animator for the award-winnng BBC sketch comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus which ran from 1969 to 1974. His penchant for the surreal and fantastical can be seen in his future film work which often feature black comedy with a twist.  Linda Hayden, seen here next to Gilliam wearing a fur-trimmed coat and smiling at the camera, features heavily in the Cork Film Festival archive. She came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers and was often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham with whom she starred in the Confessions series of movies. Born in 1953, Linda Hayden was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977) and the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976). Controversially she appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith was the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith  – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. The delegates are not identified but we recognise the English actor Linda Hayden standing at the foot of the Aer Lingus stairway with Breen. Nearby two members of the British Airways cabin crew stand close by – they are wearing a uniform designed by Sir Hardy Amies (1909-2003), official dressmaker to the Queen. This particular uniform was introduced in 1972 and replaced in 1977 which helps us date this picture, dated 1970s, further. The English actor David Hemmings stands at the bottom left of the photo with his arm around an unidentified delegate. Behind him, in a light coloured dress, his then partner Prudence de Casembroot, is seen looking off into the distance. Both Linda Hayden and David Hemmings were stars of British cinema during the 1970s. Above them on the stairway, a contingent of festival delegates, a few of whom are wearing festival ribbons on their lapel, pose for the camera. The airport is not identified but we suggest the background might be of the pier building at Dublin Airport. Title A name given to the resource Miss Movie Girl Betty Philbin and her sister Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Miss Movie Girl, Betty Philbin Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of Miss Movie Girl 1973, Betty Philbin, taken at the airport. Philbin, wearing a white suit accessorised with large sunglasses, and surrounded by her luggage, is accompanied by her sister, also in similarly large sunglasses. A similar item in the archive shows Philbin and her sister at the airport with film festival committee members and we might suppose that they are on festival business as part of the winning prize from the Miss Movie Girl competition. In October 1973 Philbin travelled to an International Congress in Venice where she hosted an Irish Whiskey event in the Hotel Excelsior in Lido, Venice. She was also a guest of the organisers of the Arnhem Film Festival in Holland that year.
