Description

This is a black and white photo of the pioneering film critic Bjørn Rasmussen. In this photo, marked 1958, Rasmussen is seated at a desk speaking into a microphone. He rests his hands, folded over each other, on the crook of a wooden walking stick and is caught in mid-conversation glancing upwards. He is dressed in a light-coloured suit with a white shirt, with the collar of the shirt and tie slightly askew. The 1958 festival programme includes a profile of Rasmussen, along with the president of the jury, John Grierson, producer Joy Batchelor and MGM manager Douglas King.

Born in 1918, Rasmussen was known for a long-running television series, Filmorientering, and Filmkronik, a film review programme. He taught film studies at the University of Copenhagen and was the head of the International Jury for the 21st Berlin Film Festival in 1971. That year the Golden Bear for best film was awarded to The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini) directed by Vittorio De Sica who was a frequent visitor to the Cork festival in its early years.  Rasmussen died the following year in 1972, age 54.
