Description

This is a black and white photo of the German journalist and film critic Francis Koval in conversation with the Cork businessman and vice-chairman of the festival committee, Richard (aka Dick) Beamish. Koval, standing on the right with a martini glass in his hand, had a positive impact on the public representation of the festival during the 1960s and was instrumental in keeping Cork on the radar of the international press until his death in 1970.

This picture was taken in London at an event hosted by the London Friends of the Festival held at the Martini International Club whose logo is printed on the front of these promotional photographs. The Martini Terrace is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House located at the corner of Haymarket and the Pall Mall in London. Built in 1959 the building has attracted controversy for being the only skyscraper in this locality.
