Description

This is a black and white photo of the English actor Jack Wild posing with a festival attendee identified as 'Mrs. Simon Wade from Toronto, Canada'. Wild, with his distinctive long hair and a festival ribbon pinned to his open-neck shirt, would have been around 20 years old in this picture.

Jack Wild was best known for his role as the Artful Dodger in Oliver! (Carol Reed, 1968) which also starred Oliver Reed and Harry Secombe. Wild received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Oliver! and went on to work in TV and film including an episode of The Onedin Line (1972) with Peter Gilmore, who also came to the Cork festival.

In 1971 Wilde starred alongside Daniel Latimer and Tracy Hyde in Melody (Warrin Hussein, 1971) written by Alan Parker and produced by David Puttnam - who now lives in West Cork. Following Melody Wild starred in The 14 (1973), directed by David Hemmings who was a visitor to the festival around the same time as Wild. Wild, however, never replicated the success of his debut role in Oliver! and, following a life of health and personal issues, died from cancer, age 53, in 2006.
