Description

This is a black and white photo of the festival director Dermot Breen (1924-1978) taken in 1957. Breen is smiling up at the camera while seated at a large desk in front of an equally large poster advertising 'Tostal Corcai 1957' (Cork Pageant or Festival of Cork).

The poster depicts the Cork coat of arms with a ship sailing between two towers. The arms represent the City as a safe harbour for shipping. To the right of the towers we see three birds in relief, one of which has a strip of film in its beak and the other a traditional Irish harp. The Irish harp has been used as a symbol of Irish life for centuries. At the lower edge of the poster, we can make out the stenciled names of countries from all around the world including Australia, Canada, France, GB, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaya, Pakistan, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and USA.
