Description

This black and white photo shows the festival director Dermot Breen in conversation with the chairman of the Film Appeals Board Conor Maguire. They are both wearing black-tie suits with a festival ribbon pinned to their lapel.

Maguire (1922-2009), standing on the left listening attentively to Breen, was a barrister, judge, EU official, and RTÉ music presenter for many years. The arts played a large part in his life and he was chairman of the Film Appeals Board from 1965 to 1973 contributing towards the liberalisation of film censorship in the Republic. The film historian, Kevin Rockett, notes that Maguire introduced film classification to Ireland, allowing for films with adult themes such as adultery or homosexuality to be shown in Ireland for the first time (The Irish Times, 17.01.2009).
