Subject
Cork Film Festival, Seamus Murphy, Award, Trophy, St Finbarr, Dermot Breen
Description
Since its establishment in 1956, the festival has awarded the St Finbarr statuette to its winners. Designed by the Cork-born sculptor Seamus Murphy, the bronze-coloured representation of the saint is 31cm high including the base. The base in this image is faintly inscribed on its sides with a Celtic harp and the Cork coat of arms, along with the date of the festival. This award is inscribed 2009 Seamus Murphy, Naom Fionnbarra. The inscription across the base reads Cork International Film Festival Trophy by Seamus Murphy RHA.
The 1965 festival programme notes, in an article by Conor Sweeney, that the awards were used from the very beginning of the festival and that the silver and bronze awards were “lined up on Dermot’s desk”. Dermot Breen was the founder of the film festival and was its director from its inception in 1956 until his untimely death in 1978.
