Description
This is a black and white photo of the Fianna Fáil politician Jack Lynch (1917-1999) on the right presenting a St Finbarr statuette to Vasgen Badal in his capacity as leader of the German delegation. The Press Comments section of the 1959 Festival of Cork programme has an image of Badal being presented the award for the film Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958).
Vasgen Badal (1891-1959) was an Iranian-German film producer of which there is little known. He moved to Germany from Tehran as a young man where he learned about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion' producing a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941.
The rear of the photo notes that the Scottish documentary maker John Grierson is one of the three men in the background looking on at the presentation. Grierson was a Scottish documentary maker who coined the term 'documentary' in a review of Robert J. Flaherty's Moana (1926). He was jury president of the festival in 1958 and, in 1972, the prestigious Grierson Awards were set up to commemorate his life and contribution to documentary film.
