Tong, wearing a velvet jacket over a white shirt, appears to be at a bar, in front of an optic spirit dispenser for Powers Whiskey.  Born in 1951, Tong is known for her television, radio and stage work including Heart of the Country (BBC, 1986), Middlemarch (PBS, 1994), and The Politician’s Wife (PSB, 1996) as well as several appearances in Coronation Street. However she is probably best known for her role as Daisy Peel in the period television drama series Upstairs, Downstairs (1973-1975) for which she received an Emmy nomination in 1977 – a year before this picture was taken in 1978. Tong's film appearances include How to Get Ahead in Advertising (Bruce Robinson, 1989), Princess Caraboo (Michael Austin, 1994), Upstairs, Downstairs Remembered: 25th Anniversary (1996) and Angel (François Ozon, 2007) with Sam Neill, Michael Fassbender and Charlotte Rampling. They are standing side-by-side holding an award that has been presented to Mann by the twelfth Cork International Film Festival, September 1967. Delbert Mann (1920-2007) was an Oscar-winning American television and film director; he directed Borgnine in Marty (1955) which won him an Oscar for Best Director. It was the first American film to win a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Ernest Borgnine (1917-2012) was a popular and well-known American actor noted for his gap-toothed grin. He has an extensive filmography and also won an Oscar for Marty (Best Actor). He would work until his ninth decade and earned an Emmy nomination aged 92 for his role in ER. He was also the voice of 'Mermaid Man' on SpongeBob SquarePants from 1999 until his death in 2012. Borgnine would receive the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award at the 17th Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2011, a year before his death in 2012 aged 95. Whorls of smoke from Breen's cigarette float past the festival ribbon pinned to his lapel. The photo appears to be signed in dark ink across the lower half of the picture. The photo is undated but we place it c.1959 when Scholz came to Cork for the screening of The Girl from the Marsh Croft (Das Mädchen vom Moohof) (Gustav Ucicky, 1958) starring Claus Holm, who also came to Cork. The film was shown at the festival on 30th September 1959. The 1959 festival programme notes that the film was based on a novel by the Swedish novelist Selma Lagerlöf and deals with love, lust and violence in a small Swedish town. The small group of six men pose for the camera smiling, on and around a staircase. While the men are unidentified we recognise Robin O’Sullivan and Gus Healy, second left on the staircase, from the archive. Healy was a Fianna Fáil politician who served Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. His presence in the festival archive goes as far back as the late 1950s when he appears in an image of the original Tóstal Council alongside the then Lord Mayor Patrick McGrath, and festival founder Dermot Breen. On Breen’s unexpected death in 1978 O’Sullivan, standing on the far right in this image in a dark suit and hand in pocket, took over and kept the festival going until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took up the cudgels in the mid-eighties. Nameplates and small flags representing various countries decorate the table around which attendees are seated. There are no identifying marks at the back but we recognise the festival director Dermot Breen seated on the Lord Mayor’s left. The Lord Mayor is standing in front of the festival logo as he makes a speech to the assembled guests. The photo frame was marked 1970 which suggests that this is the Fine Gael politician Peter Barry who served as Lord Mayor of Cork that year. The convivial group are not identified but we recognise some from the archive. On the right, wearing a dark suit accessorised with a large cross on a chain, the English actor Sinéad Cusack is turned towards the German actor Ferdy Mayne, in a houndstooth check suit and matching trilby. Festival committee member, Dick Beamish, in dark-rimmed glasses, stands front and centre. On the far left we recognise the English actor Peter Cushing (1913-1994) who was best known for his roles as Baron Frankenstein and Doctor Van Helsing in the Hammer Productions horror films. Cushing also appeared as Tarkin, in Star Wars (1977) written and directed by George Lucas. Around the time of this picture, dated 1972, Cushing had appeared in a number of horror films including Fear in the Night (Jimmy Sangster, 1972) starring Joan Collins and Judy Geeson who also came to the Cork festival.
