Born in Dublin, Larkin played parts in the British thriller film The Internecine Project (Ken Hughes, 1974), BBC drama Wessex Tales (1973) and the Australian miniseries Against the Wind (1978), which ran for 13 episodes. Larkin played the leading role of ‘Mary Mulvane’ in Against the Wind about the transportation of Irish convicts to New South Wales in Australia during the late 18th century. Larkin is married to the Irish stage, film, and television actor Jim Norton who starred as Bishop Brennan in the Channel 4 production Father Ted (1995-1998). Robin O’Sullivan was the festival director for a few years in the early eighties, after the untimely death of the festival founder Dermot Breen in 1978. O'Sullivan ran the festival on a voluntary basis until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took up the cudgels in 1985. O’Sullivan originally worked as a journalist for the then-Cork Examiner and for RTÉ news before setting up his own PR company in the early eighties – which has since amalgamated with AM O’Sullivan PR run by his daughter Ann-Marie O’Sullivan. The former festival president Charlie Hennessy acknowledged the contribution of O’Sullivan at the 50th anniversary of the festival noting that O’Sullivan “kept this festival alive when it was in very low water”. While some faces are familiar to us from the archive they remain unidentified and the only jury member identified in the photo is the Irish writer, broadcaster and cineaste Ciaran Carty. Carty was deputy editor of The Sunday Independent (1961-65) before becoming arts editor and chief critic for The Sunday Tribune (1985-2011). His books include a two-volume biography of the artist Robert Ballagh (Magill, 1986), Confessions of a Sewer Rat: A Personal History of Censorship and the Irish Cinema (New Island Books, 1995) and Writer to Writer – the Republic of Elsewhere (Lilliput Press, 2019), with interviews by Carty of great writers including Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, and Seamus Heaney. Carty was the director and curator of the annual Hennessy Literary Awards for new Irish writing and maintained and edited the featured writing in national papers over the years including the Sunday Tribune, Irish Independent, and finally The Irish Times. However, following lack of sponsorship after Hennessy withdrew in 2018, New Irish Writing ceased operation in April 2020. Title A name given to the resource Festival mascots outside the Cork Opera House Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Cork Opera House Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photograph of a street sweeper pushing his cleaning truck in front of the Cork Opera House and being escorted by two festival mascots. The mascots, dressed as film negatives, are holding balloons decorated with the 1996 festival logo which helps us date this photo to the 28th edition of the festival. They are promoting the festival in front of the Cork Opera House on Emmet Place. Beyond them we see the traffic heading towards Lavitts Quay and over to Camden Place across the River Lee. The façade of the Opera House has changed since this photo was taken and in 2003 renovation works on the façade of the building, and the surrounding Emmet Place, were completed. The festival mascots in this picture are standing at Emmet Place which has since been redeveloped into a plaza-like square. We can see the back of the choir, facing the conductor, as they sing. The conductor is looking down at his music - his arms raised in gesticulation. To the right of the choir an organist, his music strewn on the lid of the piano, accompanies the choir. Below them we can see the congregation seated in church pews that stretch before us and up as far as the mosaic-tiled apse that surrounds the marble altar. The Church is not identified but we can tell from this photo that it is the interior of St Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. With its Byzantine-styled red-brick exterior the Church and Friary of St Francis was founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century, before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork Courthouse and partially stands on the site of old Broad Lane Church. Whilst typical in style for 1950s Ireland it retains notable interior fittings that distinguish it, such as its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Professor Umberto Noni who declared it to be 'the very crowning of [his] life's work'. The pews are full and at the back of the Church, by the stained glass doors, we can just about make out the crowds standing by the open doors of the Church. The Church is not identified but we can tell from this photo that it is the interior of St Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. St Francis Church is a Byzantine-style red-brick church and friary founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century, before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork City Courthouse and partially stands on the site of the old Broad Lane Church. Whilst typical in style for 1950s Ireland it retains notable interior fittings that distinguish it, such as its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light, and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Umberto Noni. When it was being built in 1954 workmen found part of the old city wall of Cork and an inscribed stone dated '1586' which is now part of the wall of the friary. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr mass. Title A name given to the resource Festival Mass congregation with Lord Mayor Séan O'Leary Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Festival Mass Description An account of the resource This is an undated black and white photo of the congregation at a film festival mass in St Francis Church, Cork. The pews are full and those without seats stand up against the church walls. We notice the Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary kneeling at the outside edge of the front pew, folded hands resting under his chin. Across the aisle the former Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy, kneels next to the festival director Dermot Breen, and his wife Vida who wears a white lace veil. Along the church pew the congregation kneel in prayer, some holding rosary beads. The presence of Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary helps us date this photo to 1972 or 1973.
