Joseph Tomelty (1911-1995) was a cultural tour de force from the North of Ireland known for his work on radio as well as the stage. His was a familiar face on the screen, with his distinctive white-haired, bushy-browed features. Born in County Down, on the east coast of Ulster, he was based in Northern Ireland where he made a significant contribution to its cultural history. He was instrumental in founding and managing the Group Theatre in Belfast in 1940 where his plays would be staged (apart from the controversial 1944 play The End House, which was premiered at the Abbey Theatre because the Northern theatres wouldn't show it). He wrote comedy dramas for the BBC, in particular The McCooeys which lasted seven years. He also worked in Hollywood but it was for his enduring committment to the North of Ireland that he is fondly remembered. In this image Tomelty is standing at the altar of the Byzantine-styled red-brick Church and Friary of St Francis. Behind him we can make out the elaborate decorated mosaic tiles of the apse behind the altar and beside him four priests stand with hands folded in prayer. St Francis Church was founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork City Courthouse and partially stands on the site of old Broad Lane Church. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr Mass. Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, judge and Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972. (So while this photo is not dated we can date it as 1972 given his term of office.) O'Leary studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. He noted that holding the Mayoralty of Cork was one of the greatest honors of his life. They are posing amidst the roof-top detritus of abandoned steel poles and advertising hoarding while below them the hustle and bustle of city life continues. One of the girls sits on the wall parapet while the other leans insouciantly against a hoarding pole; they seem to be on the roof of the 60-foot fly-tower of the Opera House. They are both wearing dark-coloured tops, with the festival logo for the 41st Cork International Film Festival which took place in October 1996, which helps us date this photo. The Cork Opera House was conceived in 1852, following the Cork Exhibition, and opened in 1855. The building was originally called the ‘Athenaeum’ and eventually renamed Cork Opera House in 1877. It burnt down in 1955 and was reopened by President Éamon de Valera in October 1965. In this reconstruction, it retained a somewhat bleak wall of brick, with the equally bleak fly-tower used to accommodate scene changes. In 2003 renovation works on the façade of the building, and the surrounding Emmet Place, was completed but did not impact upon the fly-tower. The fly-tower infamously provided the backdrop to the iconic Toyota roof sign which occupied 3 sides of the tower on the north, east, and west. In 2019 the Toyota sign was replaced by UCC signage in a new collaboration with UCC, and the old Toyota letters, at 1.5 metres tall, were recommissioned by the Greek artist <a href="https://www.billbalaskas.com/">Bill Balaskas</a>. Balaskas transformed the six Toyota letters into a public art installation called 'Red Air'. The panoramic view from the fly-tower here looks out towards Emmet Place below, which has since been redeveloped into a plaza-like square, and along Lavitts Quay. Traffic lines up across the River Lee at Camden Place, from the direction of the three-span St. Patrick’s Bridge beyond. Tiomkin and his wife are standing on the left of the photo, holding drinks, while in conversation with Breen and an unidentified colleague. Dimitri Tiomkin (1894-1979) was Ukrainian by birth and trained in Russia and Berlin, before moving eventually to Hollywood where he was best known for his scores for Western films, including work with the directors Frank Capra, Fred Zinnemann, and Alfred Hitchcock amongst others. In all, he received twenty-two Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars including three for Best Original Score for High Noon (Fred Zinneman, 1952), The High and the Mighty (William Wellman, 1954), and The Old Man and the Sea (John Sturges, Fred Zinnemann, 1958) as well as an Oscar for Best Original Song for The Ballad of High Noon. In this image, Tiomkin and his wife are at a reception for the film Tchaikovsky which was a Soviet-American collaboration about the Russian composer Pytor Illyich Tchaikovsky. Tiomkin scored the music for the film which was nominated for an Academy Award in the foreign-language category. It was a tribute by Tiomkin, as a composer, to another Russian composer and was one of the last motion picture films to be scored by him. Hosted by the London Friends of Cork, and organised by Tom Nicholas, the London reception was a regular event, sometimes held at the iconic Martini Terrace at New Zealand House, and attended by celebrities and friends of the festival. Greg Smith (1939-2009), standing on the left wearing a light-coloured fitted jacket, was the producer behind a series of X-rated successful movies during the 1970s including Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). His collaborations with the Irish director Norman Cohen also include Spike Milligan’s war memoirs: Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (Norman Cohen, 1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977), starring Lynda Bellingham and Pamela Stephenson both of whom are in the archive. Born in London, Smith worked in theatre as a young boy before establishing a talent agency in London where he signed on the Irish filmmaker Cohen. With the relaxation of censorship laws in the UK, Smith and Cohen turned a series of risqué best-selling paperback books, by Christopher Wood, into a successful run of Confessions movies. Smith went on to produce Stand up, Virgin Soldiers, starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham who worked in many of his movies during this era. Lynda Bellingham (1948-2014) was an English actor, broadcaster, and author who was a familiar presence on British television, in particular for her work as lunchtime chat show host on Loose Women between 2007 and 2011, with whom she made more than 300 appearances. She also had a long-standing television career in such shows as All Creatures Great and Small and as the Inquisitor in the Doctor Who serial Trial of a Time Lord in 1986. Annis, wearing a cheese-cloth style tunic, is turned to O’Connell chatting while Mayne smiles directly at the camera. O’Donnell, in dark-rimmed glasses, might be the legendary Cork publican Brian O’Donnell of the tiny Hi-B bar on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork. Infamously he would throw you out of his bar, located at the top of a somewhat dilapidated staircase, if you took a call on your phone or caused him consternation in any way. O’Donnell died in 2019 attracting warm tributes from Cork and beyond. Francesca Annis is an English film and stage actor born in 1945 who began acting when she was a teenager. She has a prolific film career and films include Cleopatra (Joseph Mankiewicz,1962) when she was age 16, with Elizabeth Taylor; Krull (Peter Yates, 1983), Dune (David Lynch, 1984) and the directorial debut by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon (1986). At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) directed by the Polish-French film director Roman Polanski, whose wife, Sharon Tate, had been murdered recently in Hollywood by the Charles Manson family.  Annis is shown in this picture with Ferdy Mayne, who also worked with Polanski in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate whom Polanski married the following year. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968), and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams, who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who also came to the Cork festival. Koval, standing on the right with a martini glass in his hand, had a positive impact on the public representation of the festival during the 1960s and was instrumental in keeping Cork on the radar of the international press until his death in 1970. This picture was taken in London at an event hosted by the London Friends of the Festival held at the Martini International Club whose logo is printed on the front of these promotional photographs. The Martini Terrace is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House located at the corner of Haymarket and the Pall Mall in London. Built in 1959 the building has attracted controversy for being the only skyscraper in this locality. Koval, on the left with glass in hand, is smiling directly at the camera while Breen is turned towards his companion. Kazma is wearing a light-coloured satin dress accessorised with a glass bead necklace. Her dark hair is tied up and she is smiling broadly. The photo, marked with the details of a London-based photographer, was probably taken in London at a reception held by the London Friends of Cork at the Martini Terrace. The journalist Koval was a frequent guest of the festival. He was a respected film critic who had a positive impact on the public representation of the festival during the 1960s. He attended international film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Locarno in Switzerland, and Cork, and his reviews were published in publications from Germany, France, Switzerland, and America. Koval always presented Cork in a most congenial fashion and was instrumental in keeping Cork on the radar of the international press until his death in 1970.
