Thomas Pearse Leahy was Lord Mayor of Cork in 1969 which corroborates the date of this photo and makes Geeson age 21 years old when she came to visit Cork. Leahy was a member of the Labour party and served one term of office as Lord Mayor in Cork. During the Northern Ireland troubles, Sinn Féin organised a march through the city, led by the Thomas Ashe Piper’s Band, and placards saying “Cork Bleeds for Derry” and “Cork Supports its Northern Brothers”. Following the death of nine-year-old Patrick Rooney in Belfast, Lord Mayor Pearse Leahy said that Cork could offer refuge and accommodate 1,000 children from Northern Ireland trouble spots. The actor Judy Geeson (1948-) was a popular English film, television, and stage actor who began her career with television work such as in The Newcomers from 1965 to 1967 and Poldark in the mid-1970s. However it was her role in To Sir, With Love (James Clavell, 1967), age 18, opposite Sidney Poitier that secured her place in film history. Her filmography includes 10 Rillington Place (Richard Fleischer, 1971) with Richard Attenborough, the notoriously panned Carry on England (Gerald Thomas, 1976), and a supporting role in The Eagle Has Landed (John Sturges, 1976) alongside Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, and Jenny Agutter. Geeson is the sister of Carry On and Bless This House actor Sally Geeson (1950-). Judy Geeson was married to Sean Kenny, the Irish theatre designer, in 1969, until his sudden death in 1973, age 43. Born in Cork, Pearse Wyse (1928-2009) was a Fianna Fáil politician who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974, when this picture was taken. The photo is undated but we can put it at 1976 or 1977 during the mayoralty of French. While the winner of the award, wearing a long white dress, is currently unidentified, we can just about recognise the face of the English actor, David Hemmings, on the far right. Seán French, served as Lord Mayor of Cork, from 1976 to 1977. He represented Cork in Dáil Éireann for 15 years and was a trusted confidante of former Taoiseach Jack Lynch; French ran alongside Lynch in the 1969 and 1973 general elections and would benefit from the large transfers from Lynch who had a huge surplus of votes. His father, also called Seán French, also served as both a Fianna Fáil TD and a Lord Mayor of Cork serving seven terms until his early death, age 47, in 1937. In addition to his political duties Seán French sat on the board of Glen Rovers and the Cork County Basketball Board were he was treasurer and at his funeral Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, noted that French had made an enormous contribution to public life in Cork. The Lord Mayor, wearing the sterling silver and gold chain of office, is looking down at the mace smiling as he shows it to Bellingham and Hayden. These photos, taken by the same photographer Donal Sheehan, and each of similar size, give us a chance to look at the sterling silver ornamental mace which is one of four possessed by the Cork City Council. The historical information page on the Cork City Council website notes that they are all alike but vary in size. A ceremonial mace is intended to represent an official’s authority and is represented in art as far back as Ancient Egypt. Once used as practical weapons they became increasingly decorative over time and evolved into the civic mace, very similar to the one that we see here in the picture – with a flanged head of ornamental beaded and scalloped bands at the top of the mace, carrying the orb and cross. The original Cork mace is 36 inches long and was made in 1696 by the Cork silver and goldsmith, Robert Goble, with chasing made by a Flemish immigrant goldsmith, Charles Begheagle. From the carpet and room décor, we guess that they are seated in the Lord Mayor’s Chambers at the City Hall which was built in 1936. The room is decorated with memorabilia, gifts, and artworks and in this image we can make out part of the carpet that bears the City’s coat of arms. The Lord Mayor, wearing his chain of office, sits at the centre with his wife on his right. Around them, guests pose for the picture and include Professor Piero Calì from UCC, who stands second from left in the back row. Professor Calì (-2008), was originally from Milan before moving to Cork where he was a Professor of Italian at the University. He founded the Cork branch of the Dante Alighieri Society in 1957, with his UCC colleague Ethna Byrne-Costigan (1904-1991). Formed in 1889, the Rome-based Dante Alighieri Society (Società Dante Alighieri) aims to promote an interest in the Italian language and culture with branches in more than 60 countries across the world. The Lord Mayor, wearing the chain of office, is standing at the round dinner table making a speech while Kevin Owens, on his right next to the festival director Dermot Breen, looks up to the camera as the picture is taken. A young child, arms crossed, also catches the flash of the camera. Geary, with his distinctive sideburns, sits on the far left and glances down at the table while O’Leary speaks. Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, judge and Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-73. He studied at the University College Cork before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. Kevin Owens, sitting next to O'Leary in this picture, was born in Charleville; he was a well-known radio performer with radio programmes including Melody from Munster, Songs of the Night, and Music of the Nation. Owens worked with Bernard Geary and gained success with his solo performance in Geary’s Mass of Saint Finbarr on the Aisling record label. For many years Owens was a member of the Holy Cross Church Parish Choir in Charleville and in 1994 he received the Papal honor Benemerenti Medal from the then Bishop of Cloyne Dr John Magee for his services to the parish as a singer. His colleague at this table, Bernard Geary, was born in Gurranabraher, Cork in 1934. He studied music at the University College Cork during the 1950s and was encouraged in his compositions by Professor Aloys Fleischmann. Geary composed the Cork Film Festival-commissioned nine-movement Mass of Saint Finbarr for tenor, choir and organ in 1973 which was first performed at the Church of St. Francis in Cork, with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film Festival Choir. O’Sullivan was Lord Mayor of Cork during 1971-1972 which helps us date this photo. They are accompanied by a smiling Westropp Irvine, a representative from Player & Wells (Ireland) Ltd. Along with the Irish Tourist Board, Player & Wells provided financial support to the festival for many years during the 1960s and early 1970s.
