The Fine Gael Lord Mayor, Timothy J O’Sullivan, was Lord Mayor of Cork during 1971-1972 which helps us date this photo. We notice the dark-haired English screenwriter, Wolf Mankowitz, seated behind the Lord Mayor, wearing a dark polo neck top under his suit. Mankowitz moved to Cork in 1971 to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists. In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson, and Harry Towb. It was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972. The back of the photo notes the company of David Coughlan, Dick Murphy, and Frank Dorgan. Philip Green was born in East London in 1911 and had an extensive career in film music composition. He composed hundreds of film scores and themes for popular television programmes during his career. However, it was his conversion to Catholicism in the early 1970s that contributed to his creation of the St Patrick's Mass, which he composed, produced, and recorded in 1970 before bringing it to Cork. The Mass was a personal tribute of thanksgiving to not only the church, but Ireland too, for which he had a fondness. The work is by the Swiss animation director and artist, Georges Schwizgebel (1944-), whose paint-on-glass-animated 2004 film L'Homme sans ombre (The Man With No Shadow) won various awards. This image is from his short 6 min. film The Year of the Deer which he made in 1995. The painting shows a doe and a dog squaring up. They circle each other on a green lawn flecked with brown leaves; the shadow of a tree falls over them. The upper quarter of the programme is deep green against which the festival information is printed. The back cover is an advertisement for Corona Extra beer who were the main sponsors of the festival that year. The image of an ice-cold bottle of Corona Extra beer – with drops of condensation and a wedge of lime inserted in the neck – dominates the length of the blue-coloured page. Transparent film reel is wrapped around the gold beer-filled bottle in a loose circular fashion. The programme is a soft card-bound issue measuring 17cm x 24cm. The 1968 programme is a slim soft card-bound programme measuring 26.5cm x 11cm. The bind is stapled and it has 60 numbered pages. The bind is stapled and it has 56 numbered pages. There is slight wear and tear and rust damage around the staples. The cover design, by Harry Wallace, is repeated across many editions of the festival during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The pdf version includes profiles and images of festival jury members Margaret Hinxman (England), John Baxter (Australia), Edmund Luft (Germany), Vinicio Marinucci (Italy) and Seamus O’Connor (Ireland). Articles include A Tribute to Bryan Forbes (pp.44-45). There is a short article about the St Finnbarr Statuette Award (Naomh Fionnbarra) designed by Seamus Murphy on page 4. The brochure also includes a number of advertisements from local and national companies across all sectors of the business world.
