Description
This is a black and white photo of the English actor Dawn Addams and the Fianna Fáil politician Jack Lynch presenting her with an award. Addams, in a light-coloured evening gown, decorated at the waist with a brooch and a trailing ribbon, is shown in profile accepting her award from Lynch who is in a dark suit. They are smiling and shaking hands as he passes her the award.
Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork Film Festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades Addams worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly, 1952), the then controversial, The Moon is Blue (Otto Preminger, 1953), and A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) starring Charlie Chaplin which was screened at the Cork Film Festival that year.
Jack Lynch (1917-1999) would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. At the time of this picture (marked as 1957) he served as Minister for Education and Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs. He is also played Gaelic sports for Cork and is regarded as one of the greatest dual players of all-time.
