Description
This is a black and white photo of the English actor Sir Alec Guinness standing with the festival director Dermot Breen. They are outdoors, possibly on a boat, standing side-by-side wearing heavy coats. Both are looking directly at the camera; Guinness is wearing a dark-coloured coat and a flat hat with his hands folded in front of him carrying a pair of light-coloured gloves. Breen, in a tweed coat, has his hands in his pockets. In the distance we see the silhouette of tall chimney stacks on the horizon.
Sir Alec Guinness (1914-2000) featured in many Ealing Comedies including Kind Heart and Coronets (Robert Hamer, 1949) where he played nine characters. His collaborations with the film director David Lean include Fagin in Oliver Twist (1948) and opposite William Holden in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He has made many television appearances including the role of George Smiley in the serialisation of two novels by John le Carré, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and Smiley's People (1982).
Most notably he is remembered for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas' original Star Wars Trilogy for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1959 for his services to the arts.
