Description

This is a black and white photo of the film producter Vasgen Badal and Norma Crosbie greeting each other. Both are in formal wear and Badal looks on, vaguely distracted, while Norma Crosbie, dressed in a white lace dress, leans in to kiss him. The photo is dated 1958 and we note from the 1959 Festival of Cork Programme that Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr that year by Jack Lynch, TD, for the documentary Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958).

Badal was an Iranian-born film producer and distributor who moved to Germany as a young man where he learnt about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion.' He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive.
