Description

This is a black and white photo of the festival director Dermot Breen standing in front of a large display board with an unidentified colleague. The two men chat as Breen rests his left hand on the display for the film The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (Bruce Beresford, 1972). The comic-book style promotional posters for The Adventures of Barry McKenzie reflect the madcap bawdy nature of this Australian comedy. The film is based on a character created for the British satirical weekly Private Eye magazine and the iconic role of Aunt Edna was played by Barry Humphries. The film also starred Barry Crocker, Spike Milligan, and Peter Cook – one of the original founders of Private Eye. The Adventures was a hit and was the first Australian film to make over $1 million at the national box office.
