Description
This is a black and white group photo of the Lord Mayor Seán French and his wife, Patricia French, sitting with delegates and guests from the Department of Italian at University College Cork (UCC). From the carpet and room décor, we guess that they are seated in the Lord Mayor’s Chambers at the City Hall which was built in 1936. The room is decorated with memorabilia, gifts, and artworks and in this image we can make out part of the carpet that bears the City’s coat of arms.
The Lord Mayor, wearing his chain of office, sits at the centre with his wife on his right. Around them, guests pose for the picture and include Professor Piero Calì from UCC, who stands second from left in the back row.
Professor Calì (-2008), was originally from Milan before moving to Cork where he was a Professor of Italian at the University. He founded the Cork branch of the Dante Alighieri Society in 1957, with his UCC colleague Ethna Byrne-Costigan (1904-1991). Formed in 1889, the Rome-based Dante Alighieri Society (Società Dante Alighieri) aims to promote an interest in the Italian language and culture with branches in more than 60 countries across the world. The Cork branch is a voluntary society that meets weekly to run classes and hold cultural evenings.
