Subject

Cork Film Festival, Lord Mayor, Patrick McGrath, Louis Elliman, Ardmore Studios

Description

This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor, Patrick McGrath, posing with the Irish film producer Louis Elliman and a representative from Rank Organisation. The photo has a note marked on the front in blue ink: First Cork International Film Festival, May 1956.

Elliman, in a dark suit with his left hand in his pocket, was an Irish impresario who managed many of Ireland's cinema screens during the 1950s. He brought film production to Ireland opening the Ardmore Studios, with Emmet Dalton, in 1958. Elliman was involved with the early planning of the Cork Film Festival, advising and encouraging the festival founder Dermot Breen. The website louiselliman.com notes that he was a regular at the festival during the remaining 11 years of his life and, on its 10th anniversary, his name was included in a select list of international patrons.
