Irish Ambassador to London, Con Howard, with Father Burke and Dermot Breen

Subject

Cork Film Festival, Con Howard, Irish Ambassador, Father Burke, Dermot Breen

Description

This black and white photo shows festival director Dermot Breen with the Irish Ambassador to London, Con Howard, and the film critic Father Burke. Father Burke was a friend of the festival since its inception and he appears in the archive in a photo taken during the first film festival in 1956.

Cornelius ('Con') Howard (1925-2009) was a founding member of the Merriman Summer School in addition to his career as a diplomat. He was attached to the Irish embassies in both London and Washington during his tenure. It is noted that by all accounts he was an affable and skillful diplomat despite not achieving more recognition for his work. See Memories of Con Howard, edited by Mary Caufield (Hot Press Books, 2012).
